Buddha Purnima at Bodh Gaya
Vaishakha Purnima, the full moon in April or May (lunar calendar)

Buddha Purnima, known internationally as Vesak, falls on the full moon of the month of Vaishakha, usually in April or May. Many Buddhist traditions hold that the Buddha's birth, enlightenment and parinirvana all took place on this day, which makes it the most important date of the year at Bodh Gaya.
Pilgrims gather at the Mahabodhi Temple from before dawn. Monks lead chanting and processions around the temple and the Bodhi tree, offerings of flowers and lamps fill the courtyard, and in the evening the complex is lit. The Bihar government often holds cultural events in the town around the festival.
The weather is hot by then, often near 40 °C in the afternoon, so we keep visits to dawn and evening. Sarnath and Kushinagar also hold celebrations. Dates follow the lunar calendar; check current status before you travel.
How to do it well
- Visit the temple at dawn and after dark to avoid the heat.
- Book Bodh Gaya hotels early, as pilgrim groups fill the town.
- Carry water and a hat; temperatures can reach 40 °C.
