Benaulim, Varca and Cavelossim

South Goa's long beach, from Majorda to the mouth of the Sal

Benaulim, Varca and Cavelossim lie along south Goa's longest beach, an unbroken 20 km of sand from Majorda to the Sal river at Mobor. It is home to the best luxury resorts in Goa, 30 to 45 minutes from Dabolim. Stay 3 to 5 nights for the beach, the mansions of Chandor and the Sal river.

South of Mormugao harbour, the Salcete coast runs almost straight for about 20 km, from Majorda and Colva through Benaulim, Varca and Cavelossim to Mobor, where the Sal river turns parallel to the sea before reaching it. The sand is wide, flat and pale, the water shelves gently, and the beach is backed by dunes, coconut groves and fishing villages rather than a resort strip.

This is where the largest luxury resorts in Goa stand: Taj Exotica at Benaulim, The Leela Goa at Mobor, Alila Diwa a little inland at Majorda, and the ITC Grand Goa at Arossim to the north. Between them, the beach is often empty, used by fishermen hauling nets and a few walkers. Colva, at the centre, is the busiest stretch, with shacks and Goan families at weekends.

Inland lies Margao, the market town and commercial centre of the south, and beyond it the mansions of Chandor and Loutolim. Cabo de Rama fort is 40 minutes south, and Palolem an hour. We use this coast as the main beach base for most Goa journeys, with half-day outings that bring guests back to the pool by 3 pm.

Highlights

What Benaulim, Varca and Cavelossim does best

Twenty kilometres of sand

From Majorda to Mobor, the beach is long enough that you can walk for an hour at dawn and see only fishermen. It is flat, gently shelving and, in season, lifeguarded in front of the resorts and villages.

The Sal river at Mobor

At Cavelossim the Sal river runs behind the beach to its mouth at Mobor. Small boats leave the jetty for sunset trips among the mangroves and for dolphin watching off the river mouth in the morning.

Margao market and old town

The south's market town has a covered market for spices, chouriço and fish, a municipal garden, and old houses around the Holy Spirit Church, one of the finest Baroque façades in Goa.

Cabo de Rama fort

A large fort on a headland 40 minutes south, with walls, cannons and a small church, and views over a near-empty coast. Go late in the afternoon for the light.

Benaulim fishing village

Benaulim is still a working fishing village. At dawn, boats come in on the beach, nets are hauled and sorted, and the catch is sold on the sand, much of it to local restaurants.

Getting there

How to reach Benaulim, Varca and Cavelossim

Air

Dabolim Airport (GOI) is about 30 km from Benaulim, roughly 45 minutes, and about 38 km from Cavelossim, 55 minutes. Mopa (GOX) is about 85 km, close to two hours, so we route south Goa guests through Dabolim where flights allow.

Rail

Madgaon, the main Konkan Railway station in south Goa, is about 7 km from Benaulim, 15 minutes by car. Trains from Mumbai, including the Vande Bharat, and from Mangaluru and Kerala stop here.

Road

Benaulim is ≈ 42 km · 1 h from Panjim, ≈ 15 km · 30 min from Chandor and ≈ 42 km · 1 h 10 min from Palolem. Cavelossim and Mobor are 10 km further south. Roads are good, with slower stretches through Margao.

From our planners

Five things to know

  1. Walk the beach at dawn, when fishermen bring in the boats and the sand is cool.
  2. Swim only between the lifeguard flags; avoid the Sal river mouth at Mobor in any month.
  3. Take the Sal river boat in the last hour of daylight for birds and the sunset.
  4. Visit Margao market before 10 am, and the Holy Spirit Church in the morning light.
  5. Colva is busy on Sundays; plan beach time in front of your resort instead.

Questions travellers ask

Questions about Benaulim, Varca and Cavelossim

Is Benaulim a good place to stay in Goa?

Yes. Benaulim has one of the quietest stretches of south Goa's long beach and some of its best resorts, including Taj Exotica. It is 45 minutes from Dabolim and 30 minutes from Chandor's mansions, and Margao is 15 minutes away.

Which is better, Benaulim or Cavelossim?

Both are on the same long beach. Benaulim is closer to Margao, Chandor and the airport. Cavelossim and Mobor are further south and quieter, with the Sal river behind them and The Leela Goa at the tip. Choose by resort rather than by village.

Is the beach at Benaulim safe for swimming?

From October to May, Benaulim is wide and gently shelving, with lifeguards in front of the main access points. Swim between the flags. The sea is rough and swimming is not safe from June to September, and the Sal river mouth is dangerous in any month.

Is south Goa better than north Goa?

For a quiet, resort-based holiday, yes. South Goa's beaches are longer and emptier, its luxury resorts larger, and its villages less touristy. North Goa has more restaurants, markets and nightlife. Many of our journeys combine the two.

How far is Benaulim from Dabolim Airport?

About 30 km, roughly 45 minutes by car. Cavelossim is about 55 minutes and Majorda 20 minutes. Mopa airport is close to two hours away, so Dabolim is far more convenient for south Goa.

What is there to do near Benaulim?

The beach, the Sal river boat at Mobor, Margao's market and Holy Spirit Church, the mansions of Chandor and Loutolim, Cabo de Rama fort and, further away, Palolem, Old Goa and the Dudhsagar falls. Most outings are under an hour each way.

Is Colva beach crowded?

Colva, at the centre of the Salcete beach, is the busiest stretch, especially on weekends and holidays when Goan and domestic visitors come for the day. Benaulim, Varca and Cavelossim, a few kilometres south, are much quieter.

Is south Goa good for families?

Very. The resorts have large grounds, pools and children's activities, the beaches are wide and gentle, and outings such as the Sal river boat, Cabo de Rama, a spice farm and Dudhsagar suit children well.

Is south Goa nice in the monsoon?

Yes, for the right traveller. The resorts stay open at lower rates, the paddy and coconut groves turn green, and the spa and restaurants make rainy days easy. The sea is too rough to swim, and beach shacks close from June to September.
