Palolem, Agonda and Canacona

The curved bays and forest edge of Goa's far south

Palolem and Agonda are the beaches of Canacona, Goa's southernmost taluka, about 70 km from Dabolim. Palolem is a sheltered crescent bay; Agonda is a quiet 3 km strand where turtles nest. With Cotigao forest and Galgibaga nearby, the area rewards 3 to 4 nights at The LaLiT on Rajbag beach.

Below Cabo de Rama, the coast of south Goa breaks into bays and headlands backed by forested hills, the outliers of the Western Ghats. This is Canacona, the southernmost of Goa's talukas, and its beaches are smaller and more enclosed than the long strand of Salcete. Palolem, a sheltered crescent about 1.5 km long, is the best known; Agonda, Patnem, Rajbag and Galgibaga follow along the coast.

Palolem has become popular with travellers, and in season its shore is lined with beach huts and cafés, though the water stays calm and clear. Agonda, 10 km north, is quieter, with a long, empty beach where olive ridley turtles come ashore in winter, and a firm ban on loud music. Galgibaga, at the mouth of the Talpona river near the Karnataka border, is a protected turtle beach backed by casuarinas.

Inland, the Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary covers about 86 km² of forest, with watchtowers, streams and good birding. We base guests at The LaLiT Golf & Spa Resort on Rajbag beach, the only large luxury resort in Canacona, and fill the days with boats, forest walks and long lunches in Agonda.

Highlights

What Palolem, Agonda and Canacona does best

Palolem's crescent bay

A sheltered, 1.5 km curve of sand closed by rocky headlands, with calm water in season. Early morning and late afternoon are the times to walk it, when the light falls along the bay and the cafés are quiet.

Butterfly Beach by boat

A small cove north of Palolem reached by boat or a forest path, with clear water and, often, dolphins on the way. The boat ride along the headlands is half the pleasure.

Agonda

About 3 km of wide, clean sand, quieter than Palolem, with a few good beach restaurants and a church at the village end. Olive ridley turtles nest on a protected section in winter.

Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary

Moist deciduous and semi-evergreen forest on the Karnataka border, with tall watchtowers, streams, hornbills and other forest birds. Mornings from November to February are best.

Galgibaga and the Talpona river

A long, quiet, casuarina-backed beach at the mouth of the Talpona, protected for nesting turtles, with the river and its fishing boats behind.

Getting there

How to reach Palolem, Agonda and Canacona

Air

Dabolim Airport (GOI) is about 70 km from Palolem, roughly 1 h 40 min by car via Margao and the NH66. Mopa (GOX) is about 115 km, 2.5 to 3 hours. For Canacona, Dabolim is the airport to use.

Rail

Canacona station on the Konkan Railway is about 3 km from Palolem, five minutes by car. Some trains from Mumbai and Mangaluru stop there, though Madgaon, about 40 km and 1 hour away, has many more services.

Road

Palolem is ≈ 42 km · 1 h 10 min from Benaulim, ≈ 75 km · 1 h 45 min from Panjim and ≈ 10 km · 20 min from Agonda. The NH66 through the Canacona ghats is winding but in good condition. The LaLiT at Rajbag is 10 minutes from Palolem.

Where to stay

Rooms we book

The LaLiT Golf & Spa Resort Goa on Rajbag beach, about 5 km south of Palolem, is the only large luxury resort in Canacona, with a long, quiet beach, a golf course and a spa, and it is our base for the far south. Palolem and Agonda have many beach huts and small boutique cottages; a few are charming, but none is at a luxury standard. For guests who want more choice, we stay on the Salcete coast at Taj Exotica or The Leela Goa and visit Palolem as a day trip, about an hour each way.

From our planners

Five things to know

  1. Use Dabolim, not Mopa, for Canacona; Mopa adds more than an hour each way.
  2. Take the Butterfly Beach boat early, between 8 and 9 am, for calm water and dolphins.
  3. Visit Cotigao at opening time; by noon the forest is hot and quiet.
  4. Agonda has a strict no-loud-music rule and protected turtle zones; respect both.
  5. Most beach huts and cafés close from June to September; the area is very quiet in the monsoon.

Questions travellers ask

Questions about Palolem, Agonda and Canacona

Is Palolem worth visiting?

Yes. Palolem is one of the prettiest bays in Goa, sheltered and calm in season, with forested headlands and clear water. It is busy with beach huts and cafés in winter, so we suggest early mornings, a boat to Butterfly Beach and a stay at a quieter resort nearby.

How far is Palolem from Dabolim Airport?

About 70 km, roughly 1 h 40 min by car via Margao. Mopa is about 115 km and 2.5 to 3 hours. For Palolem and Agonda, Dabolim is the much better choice.

Are there luxury hotels in Palolem?

Palolem itself has beach huts and small boutique cottages rather than luxury hotels. The LaLiT Golf & Spa Resort on Rajbag beach, about 10 minutes away, is the only large luxury resort in Canacona and our base for the far south.

Is Palolem good for swimming?

Yes, from November to April Palolem is one of the calmest beaches in Goa, sheltered by its headlands, with lifeguards in season. Swim within the flags and avoid the rocks at each end. From June to September the sea is rough and swimming unsafe.

Which is the quietest beach in south Goa?

Galgibaga and Rajbag in Canacona, and the Mobor end of the Salcete coast, are among the quietest. Agonda is quiet for a beach with restaurants. Palolem and Colva are the busiest in the south.

What is there to do in Palolem?

Swim and walk the bay, take a boat to Butterfly Beach, kayak in the morning, visit Agonda and Galgibaga, walk in the Cotigao forest and drive north to Cabo de Rama fort. Evenings are for dinner by the sea.

When is the best time to visit Palolem?

November to March, when the sea is calm, the weather dry and the beach cafés open. April and May are hot but quiet. From June to September most huts and cafés close, swimming is unsafe and boats do not run.

Is Palolem good for families?

Yes. The calm, shallow water is good for children in season, and the boat trips, forest walks and kayaking make easy outings. Families usually stay at The LaLiT on Rajbag, which has pools and space, and visit Palolem by day.

How many days should I spend in Palolem and Agonda?

Three or four nights is ideal: one day for Palolem and Butterfly Beach, one for Agonda, one for Cotigao and Galgibaga, and time to rest. It works best as the last stop of a south Goa journey.
