Kumarakom

Lake resorts and bird life on the shore of Vembanad

Kumarakom is a cluster of villages and lake resorts on the eastern shore of Vembanad, Kerala's largest lake, 16 km from Kottayam. It is the calmest base for the backwaters, with a bird sanctuary, narrow village canals and quieter water than Alappuzha. Two or three nights, ideally with one on a houseboat.

Vembanad Lake stretches about 96 km from Alappuzha in the south to Kochi in the north, and Kumarakom sits on its eastern shore where the Meenachil river splits into dozens of channels before it reaches the lake. The land here was reclaimed from the water over the past century, and the villages are a lattice of canals, paddy fields and coconut groves, with narrow paths along the bunds and small boats instead of cars for many families.

What makes Kumarakom right for a luxury stay is the combination of space and quiet. The resorts sit on large lakeside plots with private jetties, many built from old Kerala wooden houses that were dismantled elsewhere and reassembled here. From your room you watch the lake change through the day: fishermen in dugouts at dawn, houseboats drifting past in the afternoon, and the sun setting across the water towards the far shore.

Days are slow. Walk the bird sanctuary early, paddle a canoe through the village canals to see coir-making and toddy-tapping, take lunch of karimeen fresh from the lake, and spend the afternoon by the pool or in the spa. Kumarakom is also the best place to start a private houseboat, because the eastern side of the lake is less crowded than the jetties at Alappuzha.

Highlights

What Kumarakom does best

Dawn in the bird sanctuary

The Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary, on the lake shore, is best at first light. Herons, egrets, cormorants, darters and kingfishers are resident; from November to February migrants arrive, and in the monsoon colonies of night herons and cormorants nest in the trees.

Canals by country boat

A boatman poles a slim wooden canoe through canals too narrow for houseboats, past homes, tiny churches and temples, women washing clothes and children rowing to school. This is the backwaters at the scale of a village.

A private houseboat from your jetty

Many resorts can have a private kettuvallam collect you from their own jetty. You cruise south across the lake towards Kuttanad, moor for the night in a quiet canal, and return the next morning.

Karimeen from the lake

Pearl spot, called karimeen in Malayalam, is Kerala's favourite fish, caught in Vembanad and grilled in banana leaf with a spice paste. Kumarakom's resorts and toddy shops cook it best.

Sunset across Vembanad

The lake faces west, so sunsets fall across the water every clear evening. A slow sundowner cruise on a resort boat, or simply a seat at the end of your jetty, is the best way to end the day.

Pathiramanal island

A small, wooded island in the middle of Vembanad, reached by boat in about 30 minutes. A path loops through it in under an hour, with good birdwatching among the trees and reed beds.

From our planners

Five things to know

  1. Visit the bird sanctuary at opening time; by 9 am the heat rises and birds go quiet.
  2. Use mosquito repellent at dusk on the lake, especially after the monsoon.
  3. Ask your resort for a country-boat canal trip rather than a motor boat; it is quieter and goes further into the villages.
  4. Toddy shops are part of local life, but the toddy itself is mildly alcoholic and best tasted in small amounts.
  5. Book a houseboat that starts from Kumarakom rather than Alappuzha to avoid the crowded jetties.

Questions travellers ask

Questions about Kumarakom

How many nights should I spend in Kumarakom?

Two or three nights. Two nights gives a morning in the bird sanctuary, a canoe trip through the canals and a relaxed afternoon. Three nights lets you add a day of Ayurveda treatments or a full day on the lake. Many guests add a night on a private houseboat before or after.

Kumarakom or Alleppey: where should I stay?

Kumarakom for a luxury lake resort with space, calm water and the bird sanctuary. Alappuzha, or Alleppey, is the main houseboat hub and busier. We usually suggest a resort at Kumarakom and a houseboat starting from there or from a quieter Alappuzha jetty.

What is the best time to visit Kumarakom?

November to February, when it is dry, around 30 °C by day, and migratory birds are at the sanctuary. The monsoon months of June to August are wet but green and good for Ayurveda, with nesting birds and lower rates. March to May is hot and humid.

Which is the best resort in Kumarakom?

It depends on your style. Coconut Lagoon has heritage houses, a boat-only arrival and an informal, green feel. Kumarakom Lake Resort has pool villas along a long lagoon pool and a strong Ayurveda centre. Taj Kumarakom has a colonial planter's bungalow and is next to the bird sanctuary.

Can I start a houseboat from Kumarakom?

Yes. Most good houseboat operators can collect you from a Kumarakom resort jetty or a nearby landing. The eastern side of Vembanad is quieter than the main Alappuzha jetties, so the first hours of cruising are more peaceful. The boat usually ends the next morning near Alappuzha or back at Kumarakom.

Is Kumarakom good for Ayurveda?

Yes, for shorter programmes. Several lake resorts, including Kumarakom Lake Resort and Coconut Lagoon, have Ayurveda centres with doctors and therapists, suitable for rejuvenation programmes of a few days. For a full panchakarma of 14 to 21 days, we recommend a dedicated retreat near Kovalam or in Palakkad.

Are there mosquitoes in Kumarakom?

Yes, especially at dusk and after the rains. The resorts spray and provide nets or repellent devices in rooms. Wear long sleeves in the evening and use repellent. Malaria is not a significant risk in this part of Kerala, but dengue occurs, so avoiding bites is wise.

How far is Kumarakom from Kochi?

About 70 km from Fort Kochi and 85 km from Cochin International Airport, roughly 2 to 2.5 hours by car depending on the route and traffic. Kottayam, the nearest railway station, is 16 km away. Some guests come by boat across Vembanad from the Alappuzha side.

What should I eat in Kumarakom?

Karimeen pollichathu, the banana-leaf grilled pearl spot from the lake; duck roast; prawn and crab roast; and kappa, boiled tapioca, with fish curry. Breakfasts of appam with stew are excellent. Toddy shops on the canals serve the most authentic, spiciest versions.
