Portuguese Goa: churches, mansions and coast

Seven nights through four and a half centuries of Portuguese Goa. Three nights near Panjim for Fontainhas, Old Goa's UNESCO churches and Divar island, then four on the south coast at Taj Exotica, with the great houses of Chandor and Loutolim, Rachol Seminary and Margao. Private car and specialist guides throughout.

This is the journey we would give anyone who wants to understand Goa rather than simply holiday in it. It follows the Portuguese story from the riverside capital of Old Goa, through the 19th-century Latin quarter of Panjim, to the villages of Salcete where Goan Catholic families built their great houses. Each morning is spent with a guide who knows the subject well; each afternoon is left free for the pool or the beach.

We base you first at Cidade de Goa, a Charles Correa-designed resort on its own cove 15 minutes from Fontainhas, then at Taj Exotica on the long beach at Benaulim, 30 minutes from Chandor. Lunches include a Goan-Portuguese meal at Palácio do Deão and fish curry rice in Panjim's old town, and the last two days are deliberately slow.

Day by day

The journey

Day01

Arrive in Goa, to Cidade de Goa

Overnight: Cidade de Goa≈ 28 km · 40 minMeals: Dinner

Your driver meets you at Dabolim Airport and drives you across the Zuari to Cidade de Goa at Vainguinim, a resort laid out by the architect Charles Correa as a stylised Goan hill town on its own cove. The rest of the day is free. In the late afternoon, swim in the cove or sit on the terrace as the fishing boats return, and in the evening we brief you over a drink on the days ahead.

Day02

Fontainhas, the market and the Mandovi

Overnight: Cidade de Goa≈ 7 km · 15 minMeals: Breakfast, Lunch

At 8 am, walk Fontainhas with a Panjim historian: the painted houses of the Latin quarter, the Chapel of St Sebastian and the climb to Altinho. Continue to the Immaculate Conception Church and the municipal market, with Mario Miranda's murals on its walls, then a lunch of fish curry rice at a family-run restaurant in the old town. Return to the resort for the afternoon. Before sunset, board a private boat on the Mandovi for an hour toward Reis Magos and the river mouth.

Day03

Old Goa and Divar island

Overnight: Cidade de Goa≈ 15 km · 25 minMeals: Breakfast

Be at the Basilica of Bom Jesus when it opens, before the coaches, with a guide trained in Goan church history. See the tomb of St Francis Xavier, the Se Cathedral and its Golden Bell, and the painted Church of St Francis of Assisi. After lunch, take the five-minute ferry from the Old Goa jetty to Divar. Drive through the paddy to the hilltop Church of Our Lady of Compassion, and watch the light go over the river toward Old Goa before returning.

Day04

Rachol and Loutolim on the way south

Overnight: Taj Exotica, Benaulim≈ 55 km · 1 h 30 min with stopsMeals: Breakfast

Leave Cidade de Goa after breakfast and cross the Zuari to Rachol Seminary, founded in the 1580s inside an old fort above the river, where a visit is arranged with permission. Continue to Loutolim to see one of its lived-in mansions by appointment, with its salão, chapel and family portraits, and walk the lanes around the church square. Arrive at Taj Exotica in Benaulim by mid-afternoon, with time for a swim before sunset.

Day05

Braganza House and Palácio do Deão

Overnight: Taj Exotica, Benaulim≈ 45 km round trip · 1 h 30 minMeals: Breakfast, Lunch

Drive 30 minutes inland to Chandor. Braganza House runs along one side of the village square, and its two wings are shown by family members or caretakers: the ballroom with its marble floor and chandeliers, the library and the family chapel. Continue to Quepem for a long lunch of Goan-Portuguese dishes on the verandah of Palácio do Deão, a restored late-18th-century house on the Kushavati river, by reservation. Return to the beach by 4 pm.

Day06

Margao market and the Holy Spirit Church

Overnight: Taj Exotica, Benaulim≈ 12 km round trip · 30 minMeals: Breakfast

A short morning in Margao, the market town of south Goa. Walk through the covered market with a food guide, choosing chouriço, recheado masala and cashews to take home, then see the Baroque façade of the Holy Spirit Church and the grand town houses on the square around it. Stop for bebinca and coffee at an old bakery. The afternoon is free at the resort: the spa, the pool or a long walk on the beach.

Day07

A slow day and a Sal river sunset

Overnight: Taj Exotica, Benaulim≈ 30 km round trip · 50 minMeals: Breakfast, Dinner

A day with nothing planned until late afternoon. Walk the beach at dawn to see Benaulim's fishermen hauling in their nets, then spend the day at leisure. At about 4.30 pm, drive south to Mobor and board a private boat on the Sal river, running among mangroves and moored fishing boats to the river mouth for sunset. Your farewell dinner is at a Goan restaurant nearby or at the resort.

Day08

Depart from Dabolim

≈ 30 km · 45 minMeals: Breakfast

A last morning on the beach, then your driver takes you to Dabolim Airport, about 45 minutes away, in time for your onward flight. If your flight is late in the day, we keep a room for you or arrange a final lunch on the way. Guests continuing to Kerala, Mumbai or Delhi can connect the same day.

Questions travellers ask

Good to know

Is seven nights enough to see Portuguese Goa?

Yes. Seven nights covers Panjim, Old Goa, Divar, Rachol, Loutolim, Chandor and Margao with a specialist guide, and leaves two slow days on the beach. Adding nights at the end at Taj Exotica or in Palolem is easy if you want more rest.

Why split the stay between Panjim and Benaulim?

The heritage sights cluster in two places: Panjim and Old Goa in the centre, and the mansion villages near Margao in the south. Basing yourself near each keeps drives under 45 minutes and lets you spend afternoons at the pool.

Can we swap Taj Exotica for another resort?

Yes. The Leela Goa at Mobor and Alila Diwa at Majorda work equally well for the mansions and Margao, at a similar price. We choose by your preference for beachfront, privacy or design.

How much walking is involved?

About 2.5 km on the Fontainhas walk, mostly flat, and short walks at Old Goa, Divar and the mansions. Each walk can be shortened, and the car is always nearby. It suits most travellers, including older guests.

What is the best time of year for this journey?

November to February is ideal, with dry, comfortable weather. March and April are hot but workable with early starts. In the monsoon the heritage sights are still open and very green, but boat trips do not run and the sea is rough.

Can we see the Feast of St Francis Xavier on this trip?

Yes, if you travel in late November or early December. We adjust the Old Goa day so you see the churches dressed for the feast on 1 or 2 December, avoiding the largest crowds on 3 December.

Is this journey suitable for children?

Older children with an interest in history enjoy it, especially the boat trips, the forts and Divar. For younger children, we shorten the church and mansion visits and add a dolphin trip or a spice farm.

Are guides included at every site?

Yes. A Panjim historian leads the Fontainhas walk, a specialist church guide takes you through Old Goa, and a south Goa heritage guide accompanies you at Rachol, Loutolim and Chandor. Your driver stays with you throughout.

Can the journey start in Mumbai?

Yes. Mumbai to Goa is about 1 hour by air or about 8 hours on the Vande Bharat train to Madgaon. We can arrange either, with a car waiting on arrival. Check current status before you travel for train schedules.
