Magh Mela and Kumbh Mela

Every January–February, Paush Purnima to Maha Shivratri; Kumbh every 12 years (lunar calendar)

Every winter a tent city rises at the Sangam in Prayagraj for the Magh Mela, where pilgrims bathe on auspicious days and kalpvasis live for a month. Every twelve years it becomes the Kumbh Mela, the largest gathering on earth.

The Magh Mela is held each year in the Hindu month of Magh on the flood plain where the Ganges and Yamuna meet. From around Paush Purnima in January to Maha Shivratri in February or March, sectors of tents, pontoon bridges and roads are laid out on the sand. Pilgrims come to bathe at the Sangam, and kalpvasis live in simple camps for the month, bathing at dawn and attending discourses.

Every twelve years the Mela becomes the Kumbh, with an Ardh Kumbh at the six-year mark. The last full Kumbh, called the Maha Kumbh, was held from January to February 2025 and drew vast crowds. The next Ardh Kumbh at Prayagraj is expected around 2031. During a Kumbh, processions of ascetic orders, including naga sadhus, lead the royal baths.

The largest bathing days, such as Mauni Amavasya, draw enormous crowds and road closures. Licensed operators set up deluxe tented camps near the Sangam each season. Dates follow the lunar calendar and are announced by the state; check current status before you travel.

How to do it well

  1. Avoid the biggest bathing days unless you want the crowds, or watch from a boat.
  2. Stay in a licensed deluxe camp near the Sangam to avoid road closures.
  3. Pack thermal layers; nights on the flood plain fall close to 5 °C.

Questions travellers ask

Good to know

When is the next Kumbh Mela at Prayagraj?

The last full Kumbh, the Maha Kumbh, was held at Prayagraj in January and February 2025. The next Ardh Kumbh is expected around 2031 and the next full Kumbh around 2037. The annual Magh Mela is held every January and February in between. Check current status before you travel.

What are the main bathing dates of the Magh Mela?

Main bathing days usually include Paush Purnima, Makar Sankranti, Mauni Amavasya, Basant Panchami, Maghi Purnima and Maha Shivratri. Mauni Amavasya draws the largest crowds. The dates follow the lunar calendar and are published by the Uttar Pradesh government each year.

Is there luxury accommodation at the Magh Mela?

Yes, in a sense. Licensed operators set up deluxe tented camps on the Mela grounds with private bathrooms, heating and meals. They are comfortable rather than luxurious, and standards vary each year. We inspect before booking. Otherwise, stay in Varanasi and visit on a long day trip.

Can foreigners attend the Kumbh or Magh Mela?

Yes. Visitors of all nationalities and faiths are welcome to attend and observe, and many bathe at the Sangam. A guide is invaluable for navigating the crowds, understanding the akharas and rituals and choosing the right days. No special permit is needed.
