Ziro Festival of Music
Four days in late September (2026: 24–27 September)

The Ziro Festival of Music was first held in 2012 and has grown into one of India's most respected independent music festivals while keeping its outdoor, small-scale feel. It takes place on open ground at the edge of the Ziro valley, with stages built from bamboo and framed by pine-covered hills. The timing, at the end of the monsoon, coincides with the rice fields turning gold before harvest.
Line-ups mix Indian independent rock, folk, jazz and electronic music with international acts and musicians from across the North East. The Apatani community is closely involved, and local food stalls serve smoked pork, rice, bamboo shoot dishes and rice beer. The organisers place emphasis on sustainability, with limits on plastic and bamboo used for structures.
Most attendees camp, and the campsites are lively, sociable and can be muddy if it rains. Our guests stay in the best homestays or small hotels in the valley, with a driver for transfers to and from the grounds. Days are free to explore Apatani villages and the paddy fields, with evenings at the stages.
How to do it well
- Book rooms by June; the valley has very little accommodation, and it sells out quickly.
- Bring waterproof shoes and a rain jacket, as September rain is still common.
- Apply for your Arunachal eILP or Protected Area Permit well before the festival; check current status before you travel.
Questions travellers ask
Good to know
When is the Ziro Festival of Music?
It is held over four days in late September each year. The 2026 edition ran from 24 to 27 September, and the next edition is expected at a similar time. Dates and line-ups are announced months ahead on the official website. Check current status before you travel.
How do I get to the Ziro Festival?
Fly to Donyi Polo Airport near Itanagar and drive about 4 hours to Ziro. Lilabari airport in Assam and Naharlagun railway station are alternatives. Roads can be affected by late monsoon rain, so allow extra time and arrive a day before the festival.
Where can I stay for the Ziro Festival?
Most festivalgoers camp at official campsites. Rooms in Hapoli's small hotels and in village homestays are limited and book out months ahead. We reserve the best available rooms early and arrange transfers to the festival grounds.
Is the Ziro Festival suitable for older travellers?
Yes, with good planning. Staying in a comfortable homestay rather than camping, using a private driver and choosing which sets to attend makes it manageable. The grounds are uneven and can be muddy, so good shoes and a folding seat help.
