A ten-night journey planned around light. Photograph monks and mask makers on Majuli, rhinos in winter mist at Kaziranga, sunrise at the Laitlum canyons, boats on Dawki's clear river and the root bridges of Nongriat. Days start early, schedules follow the sun, and a guide who understands photographers stays with you.
The North East is one of India's richest places for photography and one of the least photographed. This journey is designed around the best light at each stop: dawn prayers and dusk on the river at Majuli, early drives at Kaziranga when mist lies over the grass, sunrise from the Laitlum rim, midday sun into the Umngot at Dawki, and soft forest light at the root bridges.
We travel from November to February, when skies are clearest and water clearest in Meghalaya. Your guide knows where to stand and when, handles permissions at satras and villages, and keeps the schedule flexible for weather. Private jeeps at Kaziranga let you stay with a sighting. Rooms on Majuli and in Sohra are simple; Diphlu River Lodge and Ri Kynjai are the comfortable anchors.

The journey
Day01
Jorhat to Majuli by ferry
Overnight: Majuli≈ 20 km + 1–1.5 h ferryMeals: Lunch, Dinner
Arrive at Jorhat and drive to Nimati Ghat for the vehicle ferry across the Brahmaputra, a crossing rich in subjects: crowded decks, river light and sandbanks. On Majuli, check in to the best available cottage near Garamur. At dusk, photograph evening prayers in a satra namghar by lamplight, with permission arranged by your guide.
Dawn on the river, with fishermen and mist over the channels. Later, watch monks build masks at Samaguri Satra and photograph them at work. In the afternoon, walk a Mising village of stilted bamboo houses, where women weave under the floors, and end with a private Sattriya dance performance in a satra, with permission to photograph.
Day03
Majuli to Kaziranga
Overnight: Diphlu River Lodge≈ 110 km + ferry · 4–5 hMeals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Take the morning ferry back to Nimati Ghat and drive to Kaziranga, with a lunch stop in Jorhat. Arrive at Diphlu River Lodge in time for an afternoon jeep drive in the Central range, where the low winter sun lights rhinos and buffalo against tall grass. Review the day's images in the evening.
Day04
Mist and rhinos in two ranges
Overnight: Diphlu River LodgeMeals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
First into the park at the morning slot for mist over the beels and rhinos emerging from it, the classic Kaziranga image. Your naturalist positions the jeep for light and background. After a midday rest, the afternoon drive in the Western range offers wide grassland views and the chance of elephant herds crossing in warm light.
Day05
Birds of the Eastern range
Overnight: Diphlu River LodgeMeals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
A morning drive in the range with the best recent sightings, then a midday session photographing birds around the lodge and tea gardens. The afternoon drive in the Eastern range at Agaratoli focuses on wetland birds: pelicans, storks, fish eagles and migratory ducks, with otters if you are lucky.
Day06
Kaziranga to the Khasi Hills
Overnight: Ri Kynjai, Umiam Lake≈ 270 km · 6.5–7 hMeals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
An optional final dawn drive, then the long road west across the Assam plains and up into the Khasi Hills, with a lunch stop on the way. Arrive at Ri Kynjai in time to photograph Umiam Lake at dusk from the forest paths above the water.
Day07
Laitlum sunrise and Iewduh market
Overnight: Ri Kynjai, Umiam Lake≈ 90 km totalMeals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Leave at about 4:45 am for the rim of the Laitlum canyons, where winter cloud often fills the valleys below as the sun rises over the ridges. After breakfast, photograph Iewduh, Shillong's great Khasi market, with a guide who helps with permission and introductions. Afternoon free to rest and edit.
Day08
Dawki's river and Mawlynnong
Overnight: Sohra≈ 180 km · 5.5 h totalMeals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Drive to Dawki to be on the Umngot from about 10 am, when the sun reaches the riverbed and boats cast sharp shadows on the stones. Photograph from the boat, then from the Shnongpareng suspension bridge above. In the afternoon, visit Mawlynnong and the root bridge at Riwai, then continue to Sohra for the night.
Day09
Nongriat's root bridges
Overnight: Sohra≈ 30 km totalMeals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
An early start at Tyrna with your registered guide for the descent to Nongriat. Forest light is soft and even in the morning, ideal for the double-decker root bridge and its pools. Take time to work the scene from both levels and from the stream. Climb back in the early afternoon and rest.
Day10
Nohkalikai, Mawsmai and the cliffs
Overnight: Sohra≈ 50 km totalMeals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Morning at Nohkalikai Falls, when the gorge is often clear of cloud, then Mawsmai cave's lit formations. In the late afternoon, photograph the Seven Sisters falls in western light and the cliffs at Thangkharang above the plains of Bangladesh, staying for the last light over the gorges.
Day11
Sohra to Guwahati airport
≈ 155 km · 4.5 hMeals: Breakfast, Lunch
A last dawn on the plateau if the sky is clear, then breakfast and the drive down to Guwahati airport, with a stop at Mawphlang's sacred forest or Umiam Lake depending on your flight time.

Questions travellers ask
Good to know
Is this journey only for serious photographers?
No. It suits anyone who enjoys photography, from phone users to professionals. The schedule follows the best light, so expect early starts. Partners who do not photograph enjoy the same places at a slightly slower pace.
What camera gear should I bring?
A telephoto lens of 300 to 600 mm for Kaziranga, a wide to standard zoom for landscapes, markets and satras, a polarising filter for Dawki and waterfalls, and spare batteries and cards. A light tripod helps at Laitlum and Nongriat. Weather-sealed gear is useful in Meghalaya.
Can I fly a drone?
Drones are restricted in national parks, border areas like Dawki, and many villages, and need official permissions that are hard to obtain. We do not arrange drone flights. Flying without permission can lead to confiscation and fines.
What is the best time for a photography trip to the North East?
November to February. Skies are clear, Dawki's river is at its clearest, Kaziranga's mist mornings are beautiful, and winter cloud fills the Laitlum canyons at sunrise. October has full waterfalls but less clear water.
Are camera fees included at Kaziranga?
Still camera fees for Kaziranga are included. Video and professional camera fees are charged separately at higher rates. We confirm the fees for your equipment before travel.
Can I photograph monks and villagers?
Usually yes, with permission. Our guide arranges permission at satras and introduces you in villages. Some people prefer not to be photographed, especially older women in Apatani or Naga areas and some monks. Always ask first and accept a refusal.
How much does this photography journey cost?
From about ₹3,25,000 per person, twin sharing, including accommodation, the meals listed, private safaris, camera fees, a private car and guide, and permissions. Flights and specialist fees are extra.
Is the Nongriat walk hard with camera gear?
It is about 3,000 steps each way, so carry only what you need. A local porter can carry a bag for you on request. A light tripod and one or two lenses are usually enough for the bridges and pools.
Can I add Tawang or Sikkim for mountain photography?
Yes. Tawang adds Buddhist monasteries and high passes, at least six nights extra. Sikkim adds Kanchenjunga at dawn from Pelling and Yumthang's valley. Both can be combined with this plan on a longer journey.
