Lunch at Palácio do Deão, Quepem

Palácio do Deão was built in the late 18th century by a Portuguese priest, the Dean who founded the town of Quepem, on the banks of the Kushavati river. After long neglect, it was restored over many years by its present owners, who brought back the house, its furniture and its terraced garden, and opened it to visitors.
The house has high-ceilinged rooms, a chapel, verandahs looking over the garden, and collections of old furniture and objects from Goa's past. The garden runs down to the river, with flowering trees and a viewing gazebo, and is at its best in the cooler months.
Lunch, served on a verandah, has featured Goan-Portuguese home cooking: dishes such as caldo, fish in recheado, chicken in a Portuguese style and Goan desserts. It is served by reservation, and the house's opening days and menu change, so we confirm everything well in advance; check current status before you travel. Quepem is about 15 minutes from Chandor.
