Chandragiri Fort and a river sunset

A late-afternoon visit to Chandragiri Fort, a 17th-century Keladi fort on a hill above the Chandragiri river near Kasaragod, followed by a short boat ride on the river towards its mouth at sunset.

The Chandragiri river once marked a traditional boundary between the lands of the Tulu-speaking north and the Malayalam-speaking south. On a hill above its banks, Shivappa Nayaka of Keladi built another fort in the 17th century, part of the same coastal chain as Bekal. Smaller and less visited than Bekal, it has square laterite walls and views over the river, the coconut groves and the sea.

We arrive in the late afternoon, when the light softens and the walls turn red. Your guide explains how the Keladi rulers, then Mysore, contested this coast, and points out the nearby Kizhur Sastha temple and the old mosque in the town, showing the district's mixed heritage. The walk around the walls is easy and takes about 45 minutes.

Afterwards, a local boatman takes you on a short ride along the Chandragiri river towards the estuary, past fishing boats and mangroves, as the sun sets over the sea. We return to Taj Bekal, about 15 km away, for dinner. River boat availability varies with weather and season, so check current status before you travel.

Questions travellers ask

Good to know

Is Chandragiri Fort worth visiting?

Yes, for a quiet evening. It is much smaller and less dramatic than Bekal Fort, but almost empty of visitors, with fine views over the Chandragiri river and the sea at sunset. Combined with a short river boat ride, it makes a relaxed late-afternoon outing.

How far is Chandragiri Fort from Bekal?

About 15 km north, near Kasaragod town, roughly 30 minutes by car. It combines well with the Ananthapura lake temple in the morning, or with a Theyyam performance in Kasaragod district in the evening. We usually time the visit for the late afternoon so that you reach the walls for sunset.

Can we take a boat on the Chandragiri river?

Usually yes. Local boatmen offer short rides on the river towards the estuary, and we arrange a private boat for you. Availability depends on weather and water levels, and boats do not operate in the heavy monsoon. Check current status before you travel.
