St. Andrew's Basilica at Arthunkal

A short visit to St. Andrew's Basilica at Arthunkal, a seafront church about 10 km north of Marari founded by Portuguese missionaries in the 16th century, whose January feast of St. Sebastian draws pilgrims from across Kerala.

Arthunkal is a fishing village on the coast north of Marari, and its church is one of the most important Christian pilgrimage sites in Kerala. The first church was established by Portuguese missionaries in the 16th century and rebuilt several times since. The present basilica, white and Western in style, stands close to the sea with an older church structure alongside.

The church is famous for its statue of St. Sebastian, said to have been brought from Milan, and for the feast held around 20 January, when pilgrims walk to the beach, crawl on their knees in devotion and take part in processions with the statue carried to the shore. Fishing communities pray here for safety at sea, and people of all faiths visit.

Outside feast days, the basilica is quiet. We visit in the morning, look inside the church and walk down to the beach where the fishing boats land. Dress modestly, with shoulders and knees covered. If you are in Kerala in January, we can plan a visit during the feast, which is crowded but memorable; check current status before you travel for dates.

Questions travellers ask

Good to know

When is the Arthunkal feast?

The feast of St. Sebastian at Arthunkal is held each January, with the main days around 20 January and celebrations running for about ten days. It draws very large crowds of pilgrims. Exact dates are announced by the church each year, so check current status before you travel.

Can non-Christians visit Arthunkal church?

Yes. The basilica welcomes visitors of all faiths, and many Hindus and Muslims from the coast pray here. Dress modestly, remove hats inside, and avoid visiting during Mass unless you wish to attend. Photography is usually allowed outside services. The beach behind it is worth a walk.

How far is Arthunkal from Marari?

About 10 km north along the coast, roughly 20 minutes by car. It is an easy half-morning outing, often combined with a cycle ride or a drive to Kochi. During the January feast, traffic is heavy and parking is limited, so we leave early.
