Athirappilly Falls and the Vazhachal forest

A drive to Athirappilly, where the Chalakudy river falls about 25 m over a broad rock face into a forested gorge, with a walk to the base, a stop at Vazhachal falls upstream and birdwatching for hornbills in the Sholayar forests.

Athirappilly Falls is the largest waterfall in Kerala, where the Chalakudy river, flowing west from the Anamalai hills, drops about 25 m in several broad channels. It lies about 60 km from Thrissur and 55 km from Kochi airport, at the edge of the Vazhachal forest division. The falls are at their fullest from July to October, but the paths are safest a little later.

From the entrance, a paved path leads to the top of the falls with views across the river. A steeper path of steps then descends through the forest to the base, where spray fills the air and the full width of the falls is visible. Allow about 45 minutes for the descent and climb back. Swimming is prohibited and the rocks are slippery.

Upstream, Vazhachal falls is a wide, rocky cascade a short drive away. The forest here is one of the best places in Kerala to see great hornbills and Malabar pied hornbills, especially in the early morning. Entry tickets and timings are set by the forest department, and the area closes in heavy rain. Check current status before you travel.

Questions travellers ask

Good to know

When is the best time to see Athirappilly Falls?

August to December, when the falls are full after the monsoon but rain has eased and paths are safer. During peak monsoon in June and July the volume is greatest, but access can be restricted. From February to May the flow drops sharply. Go in the morning to avoid crowds.

Can we swim at Athirappilly?

No. Swimming is prohibited at Athirappilly and Vazhachal because of strong currents and slippery rocks, and accidents have occurred. Stay on the marked paths and behind barriers. Wear shoes with good grip for the walk to the base. Children must be supervised closely.

How far is Athirappilly from Kochi?

About 55 km from Cochin International Airport and about 75 km from Fort Kochi, roughly 1.5 to 2 hours by car. From Thrissur it is about 60 km. It works as a half-day trip, or on the drive between Kochi and Thrissur or Munnar.
