The carved walls of Edakkal Caves

A morning climb to the Edakkal Caves on Ambukuthi Mala near Sulthan Bathery, a natural rock shelter at about 1,200 m whose walls carry engraved figures, animals and symbols made thousands of years ago, with a guide who explains what archaeologists have found.

Edakkal means a stone in between: the cave is formed by a huge boulder wedged across a cleft in the rock of Ambukuthi Mala. Inside, the walls are covered with engravings of human figures with headdresses, animals, wheels and geometric patterns. The oldest carvings are thought to date back to the Neolithic period, thousands of years ago, and later inscriptions in early scripts were added much more recently.

The visit starts at the parking area below the hill. From there it is about 1 km of steep path and steps, and finally iron ladders, up to the cave entrance, taking 30–45 minutes at a steady pace. The views over the Wayanad plateau from the top are wide. Inside, your guide points out the main figures and explains the debates about their age and meaning.

The site is managed by the state and visitor numbers are limited daily. We arrive at opening time to avoid queues. The caves are usually closed on Mondays, and access can be suspended in very wet weather. Check current status before you travel. The climb is not suitable for anyone with heart, knee or breathing problems.
