Dawn walk on the Pangong shore

Most visitors arrive at Pangong at midday and leave by mid-afternoon, so the lake shore is quiet at dawn. We meet outside your tent around 5.30 am in midsummer with a flask of tea and walk along the shore near Spangmik. The air is still and cold, often below freezing, and the lake is like glass. Few people are awake. Tea in hand, you have the shore almost to yourself.
As the sun rises behind the mountains to the east, the snow on the peaks across the water turns pink and then gold. The water shifts from grey to pale green and blue, and the colours sharpen as the sun climbs. Brahminy ducks and bar-headed geese sometimes feed in the shallows; your guide will help you spot them. The silence is part of the experience. Walk slowly and quietly. Look for reflections.
We walk at an easy pace on level ground, never far from the camp, and turn back after about an hour. Breakfast is ready when you return. Bring every warm layer you have, including gloves and a hat, and a camera with a spare battery, because cold drains batteries quickly at 4,225 m. Gloves that let you work the camera help. Stay on the gravel shore away from army areas.

What time is sunrise at Pangong?
In June and July sunrise is around 5.30 am, and in September around 6.15 am, though the sun clears the eastern mountains a little later. The best colour is in the 30 minutes before and after. We confirm the timing the evening before and wake you with tea.
How cold is Pangong at dawn?
Even in July, dawn temperatures at Pangong are often around 0–5 °C, and in May and September well below freezing. Wind off the lake makes it feel colder. Wear thermals, a down jacket, a warm hat and gloves. The cold eases quickly once the sun reaches the shore.
Is it safe to walk by the lake at dawn?
Yes, with care. The shore near Spangmik is level gravel, and we stay on it. Do not walk on ice in spring or autumn, and stay away from army areas, which are marked. At 4,225 m, walk slowly and stop if you feel breathless.
