Helicopter to Kala Patthar and Everest View

A 4 to 5 hour helicopter round trip from Kathmandu up the Khumbu valley, landing briefly near Kala Patthar at about 5,500 m opposite Everest, with breakfast at Hotel Everest View. For guests who want to stand before Everest without a trek, weather permitting.

We leave your Kathmandu hotel before dawn for the domestic terminal, where a private or shared charter helicopter waits. The first leg flies east over the hills of central Nepal to Lukla, about an hour, where the helicopter usually refuels. From there it follows the Dudh Kosi up past Namche Bazaar and Tengboche, with Ama Dablam, Thamserku and Lhotse rising on either side, and climbs into the upper Khumbu towards Gorak Shep and the Khumbu Glacier.

Weather permitting, the helicopter lands near Kala Patthar, at about 5,500 m, a dark ridge with the closest open view of Everest's summit, the Khumbu Icefall and Base Camp below. Because of the altitude, the stop is kept to about 10 minutes and you are asked to move slowly; landings depend on wind and the helicopter's weight, so occasionally the flight lands lower or circles without landing. Then it descends to Syangboche for breakfast on the terrace of Hotel Everest View at 3,880 m, facing Everest and Ama Dablam.

The return flight reaches Kathmandu by late morning. Clear mornings from October to December and in spring give the best chance. Flights are cancelled when cloud or wind is wrong, so we keep spare days. The quick climb to high altitude without acclimatisation is the main risk: anyone with heart or lung conditions, or who is pregnant, should check with a doctor first. Charters can be private for your party or shared with others; prices vary with season and fuel, and we quote on request.

Questions travellers ask

Good to know

Is the Everest helicopter tour safe at high altitude?

For healthy travellers, the short stop at about 5,500 m is generally well tolerated because it lasts only around 10 minutes. You may feel breathless or light-headed, so move slowly and avoid exertion. People with heart or lung conditions, high blood pressure or pregnancy should consult a doctor before booking. Children can fly with medical advice, and our team briefs everyone before take-off.

Does the helicopter land at Everest Base Camp?

Usually not. Most tours land briefly near Kala Patthar, which gives a far better view of Everest's summit than Base Camp, where the summit is hidden behind its own ridges. Where and whether the helicopter lands depends on weather, wind and permits on the day. Rules change from time to time, so check current status before you travel.

What is the difference between the Everest mountain flight and a helicopter tour?

The mountain flight, run by airlines such as Buddha Air and Yeti Airlines, is about 1 hour by plane from Kathmandu at dawn, flying along the range without landing. The helicopter tour takes 4 to 5 hours, flies into the Khumbu, lands briefly near Kala Patthar and stops at Hotel Everest View. It is far closer and far more expensive.
