Morning jeep drive in the Central range

A private jeep with your naturalist through the grassland and beels of the Kohora (Central) range, the park's classic route. Expect rhinos, wild buffalo, swamp deer and elephants, with a chance of tiger tracks on the sandy roads.

The Central range is entered at Kohora, a few minutes from Diphlu River Lodge. After the formalities at the gate, the jeep follows a circuit of dirt tracks through tall grass and past several large beels, with watchtowers where you can stop and scan. In the early morning, mist lies over the water and rhinos appear from it, grazing slowly towards the tracks.

Your naturalist reads the signs: fresh dung, pugmarks, alarm calls from deer, and the movement of birds over the grass. Wild buffalo with heavy swept-back horns stand in the shallows, swamp deer gather in herds, and elephants cross the tracks in family groups. Tigers live here in good numbers but are rarely seen in such dense cover; tracks are common.

We book the first jeep slot and private vehicles, so you can stop as long as you like at a sighting. Drives last about two to three hours on track. Most guests do two drives on their first full day and one on the second, choosing ranges by the latest sightings and the light.

Questions travellers ask

Good to know

Which Kaziranga zone is best for rhinos?

The Central (Kohora) and Western (Bagori) ranges have the most open views and the densest rhino numbers, so both are excellent. Western often has the highest density, while Central offers the widest mix of habitats. We usually drive both, plus the Eastern range for birds.

What time do Kaziranga jeep safaris run?

Typically there is a morning slot from about 7:30 am to midday and an afternoon slot from about 1:30 pm until 3:30 to 5 pm, with each drive spending about two hours on track. Timings are set by the park and vary by range and season, so check current status before you travel.

How much is a jeep safari in Kaziranga?

A jeep for up to six people costs from about ₹3,500, including the driver and guide, with higher rates for foreign nationals. Park entry is extra, about ₹100 for Indian adults and ₹650 for foreigners, plus camera fees. We arrange private jeeps and include costs in your journey.
