Morning climb to Taragarh Fort

An early climb above the palace to Taragarh, the 14th-century fort on the ridge, overgrown with trees and monkeys, with huge water tanks and wide views over Bundi's rooftops and lakes.

Taragarh, the star fort, was built in the 14th century to guard the gorge where Bundi stands. Its walls run along the ridge above the palace, and inside are ruined buildings, gateways and large stone tanks that once held the fort's water. It is less restored than most Rajasthan forts, which makes it atmospheric.

The climb starts from the palace and is steep, on uneven paths and steps. It takes about 30–45 minutes to reach the upper parts. Langurs and macaques are everywhere, and your guide carries a stick to keep them at a distance. At the top, the view takes in the whole town, the palace below and the lakes in the hills.

We go early in the morning when it is cool and the light is low. The fort is not for those with limited mobility. Paths can be overgrown, and some areas are unsafe, so stay with your guide. Check current status of access before you travel.
