The Goram Ghat mountain railway

The line through the Goram Ghat was built in the colonial period to link Marwar and Mewar across the Aravalli. It is one of the last metre-gauge lines in the region. The train winds down through steep gorges, over viaducts and through tunnels, with forest and streams below, and monkeys on the rocks.
We drive to Kamlighat station near Deogarh in the morning and board the local train. The ride to Phulad takes about two hours, through the most scenic part of the ghat, at a slow pace with stops at small stations. Your car meets you at Phulad for the drive back or on to Kumbhalgarh or Jodhpur.
This is a local train, simple and crowded at times, and it is the experience of riding with villagers as much as the scenery that makes it special. The line has been proposed for gauge conversion and service patterns change, so check current status before you travel. The monsoon makes the ghat green and full of waterfalls.
