Miniature painting in a painter's studio

A private afternoon with a miniature painter in the old city, learning how pigments are ground from stone, how brushes are made from squirrel hair, and painting a small piece of your own.

Mewar was one of the great schools of Rajput painting from the 17th century, producing court scenes, hunts, festivals and illustrations of epics in strong colour. The tradition continues in family studios in Udaipur's old city, where painters still grind mineral and plant pigments, burnish paper with a stone and work with brushes of a few hairs.

We take you to a studio, not a sales gallery. The painter shows how a work is built: the sketch, the layers of colour, the fine detail of faces and borders done under a magnifier. Then you paint a simple motif, often an elephant or a flower border, under guidance. The time passes quickly, and the patience required becomes clear within minutes.

For guests with a deeper interest, we add a visit to Nathdwara, 48 km north, where painters make pichhwai, large cloth paintings for the Shrinathji temple, or to the City Palace galleries to see Mewar paintings from the royal collection. Paintings bought in the studio can be shipped home, and we confirm prices before any purchase.

Questions travellers ask

Good to know

Do I need any art experience for the miniature painting class

No. The painter starts with a simple design and helps you through each step. Children from about eight upward enjoy it. Most guests take two to three hours and leave with a small piece and a real sense of how difficult the full-size works are.

How can I tell a real miniature painting from a print

Look closely with a magnifier: hand painting shows brush strokes and slight variation, while prints show dots or perfect uniformity. Real works on old paper or with mineral pigments cost more. Buy from the studio, ask for the artist's name and avoid anything claimed as antique without papers.

What is a pichhwai painting

A large painting on cloth made to hang behind the image of Shrinathji, a form of Krishna, at the temple in Nathdwara near Udaipur. Pichhwais show seasonal festivals, cows, lotus ponds and scenes from Krishna's life. Painters in Nathdwara still make them by hand.
