Chikankari embroidery with Lucknow's makers

See how Lucknow's white-on-white embroidery is made, from the carved wooden blocks used to print the design to the dozens of hand stitches and the final wash. Then shop for pieces with a guide who knows good work.

Chikankari is a hand-embroidery tradition linked to the Mughal and nawabi courts, traditionally worked in white thread on fine white cotton or muslin. Today it appears on many colours and fabrics, from cotton kurtas to silk saris. Much of the stitching is done by women at home in Lucknow and nearby villages, coordinated by workshops in the old city.

Our visit starts with block printing: a craftsman stamps the design onto fabric with carved wooden blocks dipped in a washable ink. We then sit with embroiderers to watch stitches such as the shadow-work bakhiya, the knotted phanda and the open jali, where threads are pushed apart to make lace-like holes. A fine piece may use more than a dozen stitches.

Finally the cloth is washed to remove the printed lines and starched. The guide explains how to judge quality: fine, even stitches, a neat reverse side and dense work. Chikankari from Lucknow carries a Geographical Indication tag. We finish at shops in Chowk or Hazratganj with a wide range of prices.

Questions travellers ask

Good to know

How can I tell good chikankari from machine embroidery?

Turn the fabric over. Hand chikankari has small irregularities and neat knots or threads on the back, while machine work is perfectly uniform with a continuous thread line. Hand stitches also sit slightly raised. Prices are a guide too: a finely worked kurta takes weeks and is never cheap. Our guides check pieces with you.

Where is the best place to buy chikankari in Lucknow?

The lanes of Chowk have many workshops and wholesale shops, and Hazratganj and Aminabad have established retail stores with fixed prices. We usually combine a workshop visit with one or two shops our guides trust. Avoid shops that bring out only machine work, and ask about the fabric, which affects the price as much as the stitching.

How much does a chikankari kurta cost?

Prices vary widely with fabric and stitch density. Simple cotton kurtas with light work can cost a few thousand rupees, while fine work on georgette or silk with dense stitching can run to tens of thousands. Very fine heirloom pieces cost more. Our guide helps you match quality to price.
