The evening Ganga aarti from the water

Watch the nightly aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat from a private boat moored facing the platforms, as priests raise multi-tiered brass lamps to the river. Float a leaf lamp of marigolds before you leave.

The Ganga aarti at Dashashwamedh is performed every evening after sunset by a group of young priests standing on raised platforms facing the river. With conch shells, bells, incense, yak-tail fans and heavy brass lamps, they move in unison for about 45 minutes. The steps behind them fill with thousands of people, and the river in front fills with boats.

We board a private boat about 45 minutes before the aarti begins and moor in a good position facing the platforms, which in the season means arriving early. From the water you see the whole sweep of fire and smoke against the lit ghat, with the crowd behind, and you avoid the crush on the steps. A smaller aarti also takes place at Assi Ghat.

Before the ritual begins, your guide hands you a diya, a small leaf bowl of marigolds and a lamp, to float on the river with a wish. After the aarti we either return by boat to BrijRama Palace or walk back through the lanes with the guide, as cars cannot reach Dashashwamedh at this hour.

Questions travellers ask

Good to know

What time is the Ganga aarti in Varanasi?

The Dashashwamedh aarti starts shortly after sunset, around 6 to 6:30 pm in winter and about 7 pm in summer, and lasts about 45 minutes. Timings shift with the season and on festival days. Arrive at least 45 minutes early for a good boat position or seat on the steps.

Is it better to watch the Ganga aarti from a boat or the ghat?

A boat gives the best view and avoids the very dense crowd on the steps, which can be uncomfortable for older travellers and children. From the ghat you are closer to the priests and feel the energy of the crowd. We often suggest the boat on the first evening and the ghat, with a reserved spot, on the second.

Is the Ganga aarti held during the monsoon?

Yes, but when the river rises in July and August the lower steps are underwater and the aarti moves to higher ground, sometimes rooftops. Boats may be restricted for safety when the current is strong. Check current status before you travel if you are visiting in the monsoon.
