Chitwan to Lumbini
Your options
Ways to make the journey
4–5 h
From Narayangarh the East–West Highway runs west through flat farmland and forest to Butwal, at the foot of the hills, before the road turns south towards Bhairahawa and Lumbini. The route is mostly straight and in fair condition, with busy market towns along the way. From Meghauli Serai the drive is similar. We leave after an early safari and breakfast, arriving at Lumbini for the late-afternoon light at the Maya Devi Temple.
Most of a day
Flying from Bharatpur to Kathmandu and on to Bhairahawa is possible but rarely sensible, as it means two flights, a connection and fog risk in winter. We suggest it only when a traveller cannot manage a four-hour drive. In practice, the private car is faster door to door, gentler on the day, and allows a stop at Butwal or a detour north to Tansen.
Overnight detour
For travellers with an extra night, a detour into the hills reaches Tansen at about 1,350 m, an old Newar hill town with a Durbar, lanes of traditional houses and a dhaka-weaving tradition. From Tansen the road drops to Butwal and on to Lumbini the next day. It adds variety to a Terai journey but involves winding hill roads for about two hours each way.
Worth a stop

- Devdaha, associated with the Buddha's mother
- Tansen (detour)
Questions travellers ask
Good to know
How far is Lumbini from Chitwan?
About 165 km by road, usually 4–5 hours by private car via Narayangarh, the East–West Highway and Butwal. From Meghauli Serai on the western side of Chitwan the time is similar. There is no direct flight between the two, so the drive is the standard link and fits neatly after a morning safari.
Can I do Chitwan and Lumbini in one trip?
Yes, and they pair well. Fly from Kathmandu to Bharatpur for two or three nights in Chitwan, drive about 4–5 hours to Lumbini for one or two nights, then fly from Bhairahawa back to Kathmandu in about 35 minutes. The loop avoids backtracking and suits travellers interested in both wildlife and Buddhist heritage.
Is the road from Chitwan to Lumbini good?
It is one of Nepal's flatter and straighter drives, following the East–West Highway across the Terai. Traffic is heavy around Narayangarh and Butwal, and roadworks can slow sections, but there are no mountain passes. In winter, fog can reduce visibility in early mornings, so we start after it lifts. Check current status before you travel during the monsoon.
What can I see on the way from Chitwan to Lumbini?
The highway crosses Terai farmland and sal forest, with views of the Siwalik hills to the north. Devdaha, near Butwal, is associated with the Buddha's mother and has small shrines. With an extra night, Tansen, an old hill town above Butwal, makes a rewarding detour for its lanes, temples and dhaka weaving.
