Tales of Luxury

Guwahati to Shillong

Guwahati to Shillong is about 100 km on NH-6, a good four-lane highway that climbs from the Assam plains to the Khasi Hills in 2.5 to 3.5 hours by private car. There is no train, and flights are limited, so most travellers drive.

Your options

Ways to make the journey

Private car
2.5–3.5 h

Our standard transfer, with a licensed Meghalaya driver. The road leaves Guwahati at Khanapara, crosses into Meghalaya at Jorabat and climbs steadily through pine forest, past Nongpoh and Umiam Lake, to Shillong. From the airport, add 45 to 60 minutes. Traffic at both ends is the main variable.

Helicopter
30 min

A government-supported helicopter service between Guwahati and Shillong has operated at times, but schedules and availability are unreliable. We do not plan journeys around it. Check current status before you travel.

Flight
Varies

Shillong's airport at Umroi has limited small-aircraft routes, and there is usually no practical Guwahati–Shillong flight. Most travellers fly into Guwahati and drive.

Worth a stop

  1. Umiam Lake viewpoint
  2. Nongpoh pineapple stalls
  3. Ri Kynjai for lunch
Leave Guwahati before 3 pm in winter so you see Umiam Lake in daylight.

Questions travellers ask

Good to know

How long does it take from Guwahati to Shillong?

About 2.5 to 3.5 hours by car for 100 km, depending on traffic at the Guwahati and Shillong ends. From Guwahati airport, allow 3 to 3.5 hours. Monsoon landslides can occasionally add time between June and September.

Is there a train from Guwahati to Shillong?

No. There is no railway line to Shillong. The nearest station is Guwahati. Travel between the two is by road, which is the quickest and most practical option.

Is the Guwahati to Shillong road good?

Yes. NH-6 is a four-lane highway for most of the way, well surfaced and well maintained. It climbs steadily with gentle curves. The final stretch into Shillong is slower because of city traffic.

Can I self-drive from Guwahati to Shillong?

Meghalaya prohibits renting private vehicles to tourists for self-drive. You must travel with a licensed driver, which we arrange. This is also the safer option on hill roads you do not know.
