From Hunder, the road follows the Shyok west through an increasingly narrow valley, past army camps and small villages, to Bogdang and Turtuk. It is paved for most of the way and well maintained, with some narrow sections above the river. There are checkpoints where permits are inspected. We stop for photographs and tea along the way.

How far is Turtuk from Hunder?
About 80 km, around 2.5 hours by road along the Shyok river. From Diskit, add about 20 minutes. The road follows the Shyok river through a narrowing gorge, with army camps and small villages along the way. We stop for photographs and tea, and arrive in Turtuk in time for lunch.
Is the road to Turtuk safe?
Yes, the road is well maintained by the Border Roads Organisation and generally safe with an experienced driver. Some stretches are narrow above the river, and rockfall is possible after rain. We travel by day only. Drivers check conditions each morning.
Can we visit Turtuk on a day trip from Nubra?
Yes, it is possible, with five hours of driving and three or four hours in the village. A night in Turtuk is far more rewarding. Two nights in Turtuk give time for the museum, the apricot orchards and the lanes at dusk.
Are permits checked on the way to Turtuk?
Yes, there are checkpoints on the road. Carry copies of your permits and identity documents. Check current status before you travel. Foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit, and Indian nationals have needed online registration. Your driver handles the checkposts.
