Panjim and Fontainhas to Candolim, Sinquerim and Nerul

Your options

Ways to make the journey

Private car
30 min

Cross the Mandovi on one of the three bridges, including the cable-stayed Atal Setu, then turn west at Porvorim or follow the riverside road through Verem past Reis Magos fort and Nerul to Candolim. The riverside route is slower but prettier. Evening traffic at Porvorim can double the time, so we avoid 5 to 7.30 pm.

Ferry and car
45 min

A government ferry has crossed from the Panjim waterfront to Betim on the north bank, where your car can meet you. It is a short, local crossing and a good way to see the river, though the bridges have made it less used. Check current status before you travel.

Taxi
30–45 min

Pre-booked taxis and app-based Goa taxis operate between Panjim and Candolim, though availability varies. Fares are fixed by distance. A private car from us saves waiting and stays with you for the day.

Worth a stop

  1. Reis Magos fort and church
  2. Nerul village and the river bay
  3. Museum of Goa at Pilerne, a short detour
Take the riverside road via Reis Magos and Nerul in the morning; it adds 10 minutes and two good sights.

Questions travellers ask

Good to know

How long does it take to get from Panjim to Candolim?

About 30 minutes by car for 13 km, outside rush hour. In the evening peak, between 5 and 7.30 pm, the Porvorim junction can make it 45 minutes or more. The riverside road via Reis Magos is slightly longer but quieter.

Is Candolim a good base for visiting Panjim?

Yes. Candolim and Sinquerim are 30 minutes from Fontainhas and 45 from Old Goa, and you return to a beach resort in the afternoon. Taj Fort Aguada and Ahilya by the Sea are both good bases for half days in the capital.

Can you see Reis Magos fort on the way to Candolim?

Yes. Reis Magos sits on the north bank of the Mandovi at Verem, a few minutes off the road, about 15 minutes from Panjim. Stop for an hour to see the restored fort and the 16th-century church below it.

Is there a ferry from Panjim to the north bank?

A government ferry has run from Panjim to Betim across the Mandovi. It is short and inexpensive but used less since the new bridges opened. Timings change, so check current status before you travel.
