Ways to make the journey
1.5–2 h
The road leaves Shillong to the south-west, crosses open grassland past Upper Shillong and the Mawphlang junction, and runs along the edge of the Mawkdok gorge to Sohra. It is well surfaced but narrow and winding in places. Fog can reduce visibility sharply in the monsoon.
2 h
Shared taxis leave from Shillong for Sohra, but they are crowded and stop often. For comfort and flexibility, a private car with a driver is far better, especially if you plan to visit viewpoints on the way.
