Questions travellers ask
Good to know
How far is Bodh Gaya from Varanasi?
About 250 km by road, a drive of 5.5 to 6 hours along the Grand Trunk Road. By train, Varanasi to Gaya takes 3 to 4 hours, plus 30 minutes by car to Bodh Gaya. It is the standard link between Sarnath and Bodh Gaya on the Buddhist circuit.
Is it better to drive or take the train to Bodh Gaya?
The train is faster when on time, but fog in December and January can cause long delays. The car is slower but flexible and allows a stop at Sasaram. Outside the fog season we often suggest the train; in winter, the car.
What is there to see between Varanasi and Bodh Gaya?
The tomb of Sher Shah Suri at Sasaram is the highlight: a 16th-century tiered, octagonal sandstone mausoleum set in a large artificial lake. It is about halfway and makes a good stop for an hour. The Son river crossing gives wide views.

Yes, by day with an experienced driver. The Grand Trunk Road carries heavy truck traffic, so we avoid driving after dark and in thick fog. Our drivers know the route well and take regular breaks. Our cars carry water and first aid, and drivers keep in touch with our team.
