Shinta Mani Mustang

Shinta Mani Mustang sits in Jomsom, the district headquarters of Mustang, on the old trade route between Tibet and the Indian plains. The building is in stone and timber with the heavy walls and small windows of a Tibetan fortress, softened by Bensley's eye for textiles, colour and local craft. Inside are warm suites, a spa, a restaurant and a bar, with the white ridge of Nilgiri and the dry hills of the rain shadow beyond.
The hotel is built around excursions. Guides lead day trips to the medieval village of Kagbeni at the gateway to Upper Mustang, the apple orchards and whitewashed lanes of Marpha, and the temple at Muktinath at 3,710 m, sacred to both Hindus and Buddhists. Stays are sold as all-inclusive packages covering meals and guided excursions; we confirm what your package includes. Jomsom is a 20-minute morning flight from Pokhara.
Why we book it
- Luxury suites in a valley of simple lodges
- Guided days to Kagbeni, Marpha and Muktinath
- Good in the monsoon, when Mustang stays mostly dry
Questions travellers ask
Good to know
How do you get to Shinta Mani Mustang?
Fly from Pokhara to Jomsom, about 20 minutes, then a short transfer to the hotel. Flights run only in the morning because strong winds rise in the Kali Gandaki valley by midday, and cloud often delays them, so we build a spare day into every Mustang journey. The alternative is a long drive of about 160 km, 7–9 hours, on a rough road from Pokhara.
Is Shinta Mani Mustang at high altitude?
Jomsom lies at about 2,720 m, high enough that some guests feel breathless or sleep poorly on the first night. Serious altitude sickness is uncommon at this height, but we keep the first day light and avoid Muktinath, at 3,710 m, until the second or third day. Drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol on the first evening and tell your guide about any headache.
When is the best time to stay at Shinta Mani Mustang?
April to October. Mustang lies in the rain shadow of the Annapurnas, so it stays mostly dry through the monsoon, when much of Nepal is wet, though Jomsom flights are still affected by cloud. Spring and autumn bring clear skies and the best mountain views. Winter is very cold and windy; check current status before you travel for seasonal closures.
