The short answer
Kerala has a tropical climate with two rainy seasons and one long dry season. For most travellers, the best months are November to March, and the very best are December, January and February, when skies are clear, humidity is lower and the sea is calm. Coastal temperatures stay between about 23 and 32 °C, while the hill stations of Munnar and Wayanad have cool nights of 8–15 °C.
That does not mean the rest of the year is closed. The hills are pleasant in April and May when the plains are hot, the backwaters are at their greenest in August and September, and the monsoon months from June to August are the traditional season for Ayurveda, with lower rates at the best retreats. What changes is what you can do comfortably, and where.
Because Kerala is narrow, the weather can differ sharply over short distances. A wet afternoon in Munnar can be a dry evening in Kochi, and the north, around Kannur and Bekal, has a later dry season than the south. We plan routes with this in mind, moving towards the hills or the coast as the season suggests.
Kerala month by month
The table below gives a practical view of each month for the three main landscapes. Ratings are our own, based on comfort and what is open, not on rainfall alone.
| Month | Coast and backwaters | Hills (Munnar, Wayanad) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jan | Excellent, dry, 23–32 °C | Excellent, cool nights | Peak season; Theyyam at its height |
| Feb | Excellent, dry | Excellent | Eravikulam usually closes for calving |
| Mar | Good, getting humid | Excellent | Attukal Pongala often falls now |
| Apr | Hot and humid | Very good | Vishu; Thrissur Pooram late Apr or May |
| May | Hot, pre-monsoon storms | Good | Low season begins on the coast |
| Jun | Heavy rain, rough seas | Wet and misty | Monsoon arrives; Ayurveda season |
| Jul | Heavy rain with breaks | Wet and misty | Karkidakam rejuvenation month |
| Aug | Showers, very green | Wet, waterfalls full | Nehru Trophy Boat Race; Onam may begin |
| Sep | Lighter showers | Good, lush | Onam often falls now |
| Oct | Afternoon storms | Good, some rain | Theyyam season opens |
| Nov | Very good, rain easing | Good | Our favourite shoulder month |
| Dec | Excellent, dry | Excellent, cool | Christmas peak; Biennale in its years |
The south-west monsoon
The south-west monsoon usually reaches the Kerala coast around 1 June, and Kerala is the first state in India to receive it. The first weeks bring the heaviest rain of the year, often in long, heavy bursts driven by strong winds off the Arabian Sea. July continues wet, with more frequent breaks, and by August the rain usually eases into showers with sunny spells. The monsoon retreats in September.
During these months the sea is rough and swimming is unsafe on every beach. Many beach shacks and clifftop cafes at Varkala and Kovalam close. Hill roads can be affected by landslides after very heavy rain, and in some years severe floods and landslides have struck parts of the state, as in 2018 and in Wayanad in 2024. We follow official advisories closely and change routes when needed.
Yet the monsoon has real appeal. The landscape is intensely green, waterfalls are full, crowds are thin and rates at many luxury hotels drop sharply. Rain usually falls in spells rather than all day, and temperatures stay around 24–29 °C. For travellers who do not need a beach and do not mind getting wet, it can be a rewarding time.
- Good in the monsoon: Ayurveda retreats, Fort Kochi, Kumarakom lake resorts, Thrissur and Onam
- Possible but wet: Munnar and Wayanad, with views often lost in cloud
- Best avoided: beach holidays, Periyar rafting, long hill drives in June and July
Why the monsoon suits Ayurveda
Kerala's Ayurvedic physicians have long regarded the monsoon, and especially the Malayalam month of Karkidakam from mid-July to mid-August, as the best time for treatment. The explanation they give is that the cool, moist, dust-free air keeps the body receptive and the pores open, so oil therapies work more deeply, while the herbs used in medicines are fresh and potent.
Many Kerala families still follow a Karkidakam routine of light food and medicinal rice gruel, called marunnu kanji. Retreats offer special rejuvenation programmes in this month. If you are planning a stay of 14 to 21 nights at a retreat near Kovalam or in Palakkad, the monsoon is the time we would suggest, and it is often the least expensive.
The north-east monsoon and shoulder months
Kerala also receives rain from the north-east monsoon in October and November. This is different in character: clear mornings, then short, heavy thunderstorms in the afternoon or evening, especially in the south and the hills. It rarely spoils a full day, and the landscape stays green after the main monsoon.
October and November are therefore good shoulder months. Hotels are less busy and less expensive than in December and January, the backwaters are full, and the first migratory birds reach Kumarakom. Late November is our favourite time for a houseboat. By December, the rain has usually gone from the coast.
Hills versus coast
Height changes everything in Kerala. Fort Kochi, the backwaters and the beaches are at sea level, where the daily range is small: roughly 23 °C at night and 31–33 °C by day for most of the year, with humidity that rises steadily from February to May. Munnar sits at about 1,530 m and its higher estates above 2,000 m, so the same January day that reaches 31 °C in Kochi may peak at 22 °C there and fall below 10 °C at night.
Thekkady, at about 900 m, falls in between, warm by day and comfortable at night. Wayanad, at 700–2,100 m, is similar to Thekkady on the valley floors and cooler on its ridges. This is why a classic route moves from the coast to the hills and back: in the warmer months you can spend more nights higher up, and in mid-winter you can enjoy fires in Munnar and still swim at Marari a few days later.
The hills also catch more rain. Munnar and the Western Ghats receive far more of the south-west monsoon than the coast, and cloud often sits on the ridges for days at a time from June to August. Hill roads are the first to be affected by landslides. If you travel in the wet months, keep hill stays short and flexible.
Festivals and events by season
Kerala's festival calendar follows the Malayalam lunar calendar, so most dates move from year to year. Plan around the season rather than a fixed date, and check current status before you travel.
Winter is the season of Theyyam in North Malabar, from late October to May, with the busiest weeks from December to March. In Biennale years, the Kochi-Muziris Biennale runs from December to March in Fort Kochi. Spring brings temple festivals across central Kerala, Attukal Pongala in Thiruvananthapuram in February or March, and Thrissur Pooram in April or May. The monsoon ends with Onam in August or September and the snake-boat races, led by the Nehru Trophy in August.
- Theyyam: late Oct to May, busiest Dec to Mar, Kannur and Kasaragod
- Kochi-Muziris Biennale: Dec to Mar in Biennale years
- Attukal Pongala: Feb or Mar, Thiruvananthapuram
- Thrissur Pooram: late Apr or May
- Nehru Trophy Boat Race: usually second Saturday of Aug, Alappuzha
- Onam: Aug or Sep, statewide
Our recommendations
For a first visit with hills, backwaters and beach, travel between mid-November and mid-March, and book December and January at least six months ahead. If you can only travel in April or May, spend more time in Munnar and Wayanad and keep beach days short. For Ayurveda, choose June to August. For festivals, decide which one matters most and plan the route around it.
Whatever the month, we watch the weather and the official advisories and adjust your plans locally. A good journey in Kerala is less about avoiding rain entirely and more about being in the right place when it falls.
Questions travellers ask
Good to know
What is the best month to visit Kerala?
January is the best all-round month, with dry, sunny weather on the coast, cool clear days in Munnar, full backwaters and Theyyam in the north. December and February are almost as good. All three are peak season, so book the best hotels at least six months ahead.
Is it worth visiting Kerala in the monsoon?
Yes, for the right traveller. The landscape is intensely green, rates are low and it is the best season for Ayurveda. But beaches are unsafe for swimming, hill views are often lost in cloud and some activities close. It suits a retreat or a slow lake stay more than a touring holiday.
When does the monsoon start in Kerala?
The south-west monsoon usually reaches Kerala around 1 June, give or take a week, and is announced by the India Meteorological Department. It brings the heaviest rain in June and July, easing in August and retreating in September. The north-east monsoon adds afternoon storms in October and November.
Is April too hot for Kerala?
April is hot and humid on the coast, about 26–33 °C with high humidity, which many visitors find tiring. The hills are pleasant. If you travel in April, focus on Munnar and Wayanad, keep coastal sightseeing to early mornings and evenings, and choose hotels with good pools.
When is the best time for a Kerala houseboat?
November to February. The water is high after the monsoon, the weather is dry and evenings on deck are pleasant. Late November is our favourite. August and September are green and festive but can be wet, and March to May is hot on deck.
When is the best time to see wildlife in Kerala?
October to April for comfort, with February to May improving sightings at Periyar Lake as the forest dries out. Wayanad's sanctuaries and Eravikulam often close for part of the dry season, so check current status before you travel. The monsoon is the least productive time.
Is Christmas a good time to visit Kerala?
The weather is excellent and Fort Kochi is festive, but it is the busiest and most expensive time of year, with minimum stays at many resorts. Book at least six to nine months ahead. Arriving before 20 December or after 5 January brings better availability.
When is Munnar at its best?
December to February for the clearest views and cool nights, and September to November for green hills and full waterfalls. April and May are pleasant when the plains are hot. June to August is very wet and misty. Book estate stays early for winter.
Does it rain all day in the Kerala monsoon?
Usually not. Monsoon rain tends to come in heavy spells, sometimes lasting hours, with grey breaks and occasional sunshine between them. Some days are very wet; others are mostly dry. June and early July are the wettest, and August is noticeably lighter.
