Rizong monastery and Julichen nunnery

Rizong, a Gelugpa monastery founded in 1831, sits in a narrow, dry side valley above Uletokpo, known for its strict monastic discipline. Below it is the Julichen nunnery. A calm morning visit from Alchi or Nimmu House.

Rizong lies at the head of a narrow valley north of the Indus, reached by a road from Uletokpo, about 30 minutes from Alchi. The monastery was founded in 1831 and belongs to the Gelugpa order. It is known for strict rules of discipline, and its monks keep a quiet, structured life. Its white buildings rise up the rock face in tiers. The valley is dry and narrow, and the approach feels remote.

Below the monastery, the Julichen nunnery houses a small community of nuns, who often work at pressing apricot oil and tending fields. Visitors are welcome if they are respectful and quiet. The nuns sometimes offer tea, and a small donation is appreciated. The nunnery is small and simple, and the nuns lead a busy working life alongside their prayers. Speak quietly, and ask before taking photographs. A small donation is appreciated.

The visit involves a short climb up steps to the main hall. The atmosphere is serene, and few visitors come, which makes it a peaceful contrast to the busier monasteries near Leh. We combine it with lunch at a riverside garden near Uletokpo. Allow about two hours for the visit. Wear modest clothing, and remove your shoes before entering the halls. The drive back to Nimmu House takes under an hour along the Indus.
