Sunrise climb to Thani Mai

Thani Mai is a small shrine to the mother goddess on the highest point of the ridge above Bandipur. The path starts at the end of the bazaar and climbs stone steps and a dirt trail for about 30 minutes, steep in places but short. We leave about 45 minutes before sunrise with a guide and torches. At the top there is an open clearing beside the shrine, with space to sit and a view in every direction, and on most mornings only a handful of other early risers.
To the north, the Himalaya fills the horizon on clear mornings. From west to east the guide points out Dhaulagiri, the Annapurna range and the fishtail summit of Machapuchare, Lamjung Himal, Manaslu and, on the clearest days, the Langtang range. Below, the Marsyangdi valley often lies under a layer of mist, with hilltops rising out of it. To the south the view drops over the Mahabharat hills towards the plains of the Terai, hazy and flat in the distance.
The climb is best from October to December, when mornings are usually clear, and in February and March. From April haze builds, and in the monsoon cloud usually hides the mountains. The path is uneven, so walking shoes and a torch are essential, and a warm layer helps in winter, when dawn can be close to 5 °C. We are back in the bazaar for breakfast by about 8 am, with time to pack before the drive on to Pokhara or Chitwan.
Questions travellers ask
Good to know
How long is the climb to Thani Mai?
About 30 minutes up from the end of the bazaar, on stone steps and a dirt trail that is steep in places, and about 20 minutes down. It suits anyone reasonably fit and used to stairs. We go at an easy pace with a guide and torches, leaving about 45 minutes before sunrise. Walking sticks help on the way down.
Which mountains can you see from Bandipur?
On clear days the view runs from Dhaulagiri in the west through the Annapurna range, Machapuchare and Lamjung Himal to Manaslu, and on the clearest mornings as far east as the Langtang range. The widest view is from Thani Mai above the town, and Tundikhel gives a good view too. October to December offers the best chance of a clear horizon.
Is the Thani Mai sunrise walk safe for children?
Yes, for children who can manage 30 minutes of steep steps. The trail has no sheer drops, but it is uneven and dark at the start, so each child should carry a torch and stay close to an adult. Young children may need a hand on the way down. Families often find it the most memorable part of a Bandipur stay.
