The walk to Namobuddha monastery

A half-day walk from Dhulikhel through terraced fields and villages to Namobuddha, one of the most important Buddhist pilgrimage sites in Nepal, where the Thrangu Tashi Yangtse monastery stands on the ridge, with lunch nearby and the drive back.

Namobuddha is linked to a story told across the Buddhist world. In a former life, the Buddha was a prince named Mahasattva who came upon a tigress too weak to feed her cubs and offered her his own body. A small stupa marks the place, and on the hill above stands the Thrangu Tashi Yangtse monastery, founded by the Tibetan teacher Thrangu Rinpoche, with a large community of monks in residence and prayer flags strung across the ridge in every direction.

The walk from Dhulikhel takes about three to four hours one way, mostly on village tracks and dirt roads, with some steady climbs. The route passes through terraced fields of rice, millet and mustard, past Tamang farmhouses and small shrines, with Himalayan views behind you on clear days. It suits anyone used to a few hours of country walking. For those who prefer not to walk, Namobuddha is about 40 minutes by car, and many guests walk one way and drive the other.

At the monastery, visitors may walk the courtyards, look into the main assembly hall and, at the right hour, sit at the back during chanting. Remove shoes before entering the halls, dress modestly and walk clockwise around stupas and prayer wheels. We eat lunch at a simple restaurant near the monastery or carry a picnic from the hotel. The site is busy with pilgrims on Buddhist festival days, so we check the calendar before setting the date; check current status before you travel.

Questions travellers ask

Good to know

How long is the walk from Dhulikhel to Namobuddha?

About 3 to 4 hours one way, roughly 10 to 12 km, on village tracks and dirt roads with some steady climbs. It suits anyone comfortable with a few hours of country walking. We usually walk out in the morning and drive back after lunch, which takes about 40 minutes. A guide accompanies you throughout, and the car stays within reach.

Can visitors stay overnight at Namobuddha?

Yes, there is simple guesthouse accommodation near the monastery, and some visitors stay to join the early morning prayers. Rooms are basic. Our guests usually return to Dwarika's Resort Dhulikhel the same day, but we can look into an overnight for those who want longer at the monastery; check current status before you travel, as availability varies.

Is Namobuddha suitable for non-Buddhists?

Yes. Visitors of every faith are welcome at Namobuddha, provided they dress modestly, remove shoes in the halls and keep quiet during prayers. The monks are used to visitors, and photography is generally allowed in the courtyards, though not always inside the halls. Our guide will tell you when to ask. A small offering is welcome but never expected.
