Krang Suri Falls in the Jaintia Hills

Krang Suri lies near Amlarem in the West Jaintia Hills, reached from the Dawki side or from Jowai. The fall spreads over a rock lip into a wide, bowl-shaped pool, and its colour, a strong blue shading to green, comes from limestone and depth. A paved path with steps runs from the car park down to the pool in about 10 to 15 minutes.
The best months are October to December, after the monsoon has filled the falls but once the water has cleared. By March the flow is low, though the pool keeps its colour. Life jackets are available at the pool and are compulsory for swimming. There is a small entry fee, collected by the local authority.
We usually include Krang Suri on a Jaintia Hills day that also passes the market town of Jowai, or as a separate outing from Shillong of about 2.5 hours each way. It does not combine comfortably with Dawki and Mawlynnong in one day unless you start very early.
Questions travellers ask
Good to know
Where is Krang Suri Falls?
Near Amlarem in the West Jaintia Hills district of Meghalaya, about 2.5 hours by road from Shillong via Jowai. A short stepped path leads from the car park to the pool. It can be combined with Jowai's market but is a long add-on to a Dawki day.
Can you swim at Krang Suri Falls?
Yes, in the pool below the fall, with life jackets, which are provided on site and compulsory. Swimming is best from October to March. The water is cold and deep, and access can be restricted after heavy rain. Follow the instructions of the staff at the pool.
When is the best time to visit Krang Suri?
October to December. The fall has good flow after the monsoon and the pool is clear and blue. From January to April the water drops but the colour remains. During the monsoon the pool turns muddy, access can be closed, and the path is slippery.
