Yumthang Valley in rhododendron season

Yumthang lies about 24 km north of Lachung, an hour's drive up a valley that narrows and then opens into wide meadows along the Lachung river. Fir and rhododendron forest climbs the slopes on both sides, and snow peaks close the view at the top. The Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary, on the approach, protects many species of rhododendron, from tree-sized varieties to low alpine shrubs.
Flowering starts in late March at lower levels and peaks from mid-April to May, when whole hillsides turn colour. Primulas, irises and other alpine flowers follow. Yaks graze the meadows in summer, and herders move between seasonal camps. The scene in October and November is different but lovely, with golden grass and clear skies.
We leave Lachung soon after dawn to arrive before the day's vehicles, walk along the river and through the meadows, and stop at the hot springs for those who wish. The altitude is significant, so we walk slowly and keep hydrated. Return to Lachung for lunch, or continue to Zero Point if conditions allow.
