Tales of Luxury

Nohkalikai and the Seven Sisters falls

A morning on the Sohra plateau visiting its two great waterfalls: Nohkalikai, a single 340 m plunge into a green pool, and the multi-stranded Nohsngithiang, or Seven Sisters, at Mawsmai. Best just after the monsoon, when flow is high and skies clear.

Nohkalikai is about 5 km west of Sohra town. From the car park a short path and steps lead to a viewing area on the opposite side of the gorge, from where you see the stream leave the plateau and fall about 340 m, India's highest plunge, into a pool that is often vivid green. A local legend gives the fall its name, and your guide will tell it. Arrive early to see the gorge before cloud rises from the valley floor.

From there we drive to Mawsmai and the viewpoint for Nohsngithiang Falls, where several streams pour over a long cliff side by side. In September, October and early November both falls are full and the air is usually clear enough to see far down into the gorges. By January the Seven Sisters may be dry, and Nohkalikai thin.

We fit the falls around the light. On a two-night stay we do Nohkalikai in the morning and return to Mawsmai in the late afternoon, when the western sun can catch the spray. Stalls at both sites sell tea, oranges in winter and local honey; small entry and parking fees apply.

Questions travellers ask

Good to know

How tall is Nohkalikai Falls?

About 340 m, which makes it the tallest plunge waterfall in India. The water falls in a single drop from the Sohra plateau into a pool in the gorge below. The viewpoint faces the fall from across the gorge and is reached by a short walk and some steps from the car park.

When is the best time to see the waterfalls in Sohra?

September to early November is ideal. The monsoon has filled the falls, but the heaviest rain and fog have passed, so you can actually see them. In June to August the falls are at full force but often hidden by cloud. From December to March many falls shrink sharply.

Is there an entry fee for Nohkalikai Falls?

Yes, a small entry fee, typically under ₹100 per person, plus parking, collected by the local authority. Amounts change, so carry some cash. Your guide or driver will handle payment at most sites. Check current status before you travel.
