Tales of Luxury

Kumbhalgarh lit at dusk

Stay on at the fort as the sun sets and the walls are lit, and watch the evening light and sound show that tells the story of Kumbhalgarh and Mewar, when it is running.

As the light fades, the walls and gates of Kumbhalgarh glow against the darkening hills, and floodlights pick out the bastions. Few day visitors stay this late, so the fort is quiet, with only the sound of birds settling and temple bells in the villages below.

A light and sound show has been held at the fort in the evening, in Hindi and English on different days, telling the history of Rana Kumbha, the fort's sieges and the birth of Maharana Pratap. It is a simple show, but the setting gives it weight. Timings and operation change, so check current status before you travel.

Afterwards we drive the short distance to your hotel for dinner, or back towards Udaipur if you are not staying. Bring a warm layer, as evenings in the hills are cool from November to February.

Questions travellers ask

Good to know

Is there a light and sound show at Kumbhalgarh

Yes, a light and sound show has been held at the fort in the evening, telling its history. Language and timings vary by day and season, and the show may not run every evening. Check current status before you travel.

Is it worth staying overnight at Kumbhalgarh

Yes, if you want to see the fort at sunset and dusk and visit Ranakpur the next day without rushing. One night at The Aodhi breaks the drive between Udaipur and Jodhpur or Jawai well. Few day visitors stay into the evening, so the walls are quiet as the floodlights come on. Ranakpur, 50 km away, opens to non-Jain visitors around midday, which suits a relaxed morning; check current status before you travel.

How cold is Kumbhalgarh in winter

Evenings from December to February can drop to around 8–10 °C, cooler than Udaipur. Days remain pleasant at around 22–25 °C. Bring a jacket for evenings on the fort. Kumbhalgarh sits about 1,100 m above sea level, which explains the difference. Pack layers for early starts and for evenings on the walls, and expect cool evenings from November to February.
