Podar Haveli Museum in Nawalgarh
Nawalgarh, about 25 km from Mandawa, was founded in the 18th century and became one of the richest towns in Shekhawati. It has many painted havelis, and some of the best known have been restored. The Dr Ramnath A. Podar Haveli Museum, in a haveli built in the early 20th century, is the most complete.
Inside, the frescoes on walls, arches and ceilings have been cleaned and restored, and galleries show costumes, musical instruments, miniature paintings and models of Rajasthani forts and palaces. It is the clearest introduction to how a Shekhawati haveli was organised and how its family lived.
We combine the museum with a walk to other havelis in Nawalgarh, such as the Morarka Haveli, and a stop at the town's market. The museum keeps fixed hours and charges an entry fee; check current status before you travel. Allow about two hours for the museum and a short walk.

Yes. It is the best-restored haveli in Shekhawati open to the public, with clear explanations and well-preserved frescoes. If you only see one interior in the region, choose this one or the Le Prince haveli in Fatehpur. Galleries show costumes, musical instruments, miniature paintings and models of Rajasthani forts. We allow about two hours, including a short walk to other havelis in Nawalgarh.
How far is Nawalgarh from Mandawa
About 25 km, roughly 40 minutes by car on country roads. Many travellers visit Nawalgarh and Mandawa on the same day, with Ramgarh or Fatehpur on the next. Nawalgarh is home to the Podar Haveli Museum, the best introduction to how a Shekhawati house worked. We plan two towns a day at most, as the frescoes reward slow looking.
Are there other havelis to visit in Nawalgarh
Yes. Morarka Haveli, with restored paintings, and several others are open to visitors. A local guide can arrange access to privately owned havelis that are not normally open. Caretakers expect a modest fee for opening doors, so carry small notes. We combine these visits with the Podar Haveli Museum and a stop at the town's market.
