Fort Kochi to Alappuzha (Alleppey)

Ways to make the journey
1.5 h
The drive crosses from Fort Kochi to the mainland and heads south on the coastal highway through Cherthala, past coir works, churches and fishing villages. Traffic can be heavy in Kochi, so we leave by 10 am for a noon houseboat boarding. On the way, a short detour takes in Marari beach or the Arthunkal basilica.
1 h
Frequent trains run from Ernakulam Junction to Alappuzha in about an hour along the coastal line. It is a pleasant, inexpensive option, but you still need a car from Fort Kochi to the station and from Alappuzha station to the jetty. We arrange both if you want to try the train.
Full day
Public and private boats once linked Kochi and Alappuzha through Vembanad, and private long-distance cruises can still be arranged through the lake. This is a full day and depends on the operator and water levels; check current status before you travel.

Questions travellers ask
Good to know
How far is Alleppey from Kochi?
About 55 km from Fort Kochi and 85 km from Cochin International Airport. By car it takes around 1.5 hours from Fort Kochi and 2 to 2.5 hours from the airport. Trains from Ernakulam take about an hour. For a houseboat that boards at noon, we leave Fort Kochi by about 10 am.
Should we take the train or a car to Alleppey?
A car is simpler with luggage and takes you straight to the houseboat jetty. The train is quick and local, but you need transfers at both ends. For most of our guests, a private car is the better choice; we can add the train as an experience.
Can we visit Alleppey as a day trip from Kochi?
Yes. A day cruise on a houseboat or a smaller boat from Alappuzha, with lunch on board, works well as a day trip from Kochi. Leave by 8.30 am and return by early evening. An overnight stay on the boat is more relaxing.
Is the coastal highway to Alleppey busy?
Yes, it is one of Kerala's busiest roads, especially in the mornings and evenings near Kochi. Widening works may cause delays in places. We time departures to avoid rush hour and allow extra time when a houseboat or flight is waiting.
