Munnar to Thekkady (Periyar)

Ways to make the journey
3 h
The road runs south-east from Munnar past Devikulam and Poopara, then through the cardamom country around Rajakkad, Nedumkandam or Kattappana to Kumily. Tea gives way to cardamom planted under tall forest trees. We stop at a viewpoint near Poopara, a spice plantation and a roadside cafe. Leave after breakfast to arrive for lunch and an afternoon spice walk.
3.5 h
An alternative route crosses briefly into Tamil Nadu down the Bodimettu ghat towards Bodinayakanur and returns via Cumbum to Kumily, with dramatic views as the Western Ghats drop to the plains. It is longer and hotter on the plains, so we suggest it only in the cooler months.
Worth a stop
- Devikulam and Sita Devi lake
- Poopara viewpoint
- Cardamom plantations near Nedumkandam
- Ramakkalmedu viewpoint (detour)
Questions travellers ask
Good to know
How far is Thekkady from Munnar?
About 90 km by the direct route through the Cardamom Hills, which takes around 3 hours by car with a short stop. The road is winding but well surfaced. Routes via Tamil Nadu are longer, about 3.5 hours, with views over the plains.
What is the best route from Munnar to Thekkady?
The direct route via Poopara and Nedumkandam or Kattappana is shortest and passes tea and cardamom estates. The Bodimettu route through Tamil Nadu is more dramatic but hotter and longer. We choose based on season and your interests. Both are scenic in clear weather.
Can we stop at Ramakkalmedu on the way?
Yes, as a detour of about an hour. Ramakkalmedu is a windy viewpoint on the edge of the Ghats with wide views over the Tamil Nadu plains. It suits travellers who leave Munnar early and do not mind a longer day.
Is there public transport from Munnar to Thekkady?
Government buses run between Munnar and Kumily, taking about 4 to 5 hours with frequent stops. They are slow and crowded. For comfort, flexibility and stops at viewpoints and plantations, a private car with a driver is far better. We do not recommend it.
