Eight nights for families with children of about eight and older: three in Agra at ITC Mughal for the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort, Fatehpur Sikri and a morning of birds at Keoladeo, then up the expressway to Lucknow and north to Dudhwa for three nights of jeep safaris.
Children remember the Taj Mahal, but they remember a rhino or a herd of swamp deer just as clearly. This journey pairs the great Mughal monuments of Agra with the forests of Dudhwa on the Nepal border, linked by the smooth Agra–Lucknow Expressway and a night in Lucknow each way.
ITC Mughal's gardens and pool give children space after early starts, and Taj Mahal Lucknow breaks the drive to the park. At Dudhwa the lodging is simple, and we say so: forest rest houses or a basic lodge, chosen for location and cleanliness. Safaris are shorter for younger children, and our naturalists know how to keep them engaged.

Day02
The Taj Mahal and Agra Fort

Early start for the Taj Mahal at opening, when it is cool and uncrowded. Your guide tells the story in a way children enjoy, from the optical tricks of the minarets to the stone flowers in the marble. Breakfast at the hotel and a swim. In the afternoon, explore the walls, gates and towers of Agra Fort, then a family visit to a marble inlay workshop to watch stones being cut.
Drive at dawn to Keoladeo National Park at Bharatpur, just across the Rajasthan border. Cycle rickshaws with naturalist drivers take the family along the dykes to see painted storks, pelicans, spoonbills and deer. After a late breakfast, drive to Fatehpur Sikri for Akbar's palaces, the five-storey Panch Mahal and the huge Buland Darwaza. Return to Agra for an afternoon by the pool.
Day04
The expressway to Lucknow
Overnight: Lucknow≈ 335 km · 5 hMeals: Breakfast, Dinner
Drive east on the Agra–Lucknow Expressway, about 5 hours with a stop. Check in at Taj Mahal Lucknow. In the late afternoon, climb into the Bhool Bhulaiya, the rooftop maze above the Bara Imambara, a favourite with children, then end the day with kebabs, parathas and kulfi on a short, family-paced food walk.

Day07
Kishanpur swamp deer and a last safari
Overnight: Dudhwa≈ 4 h round tripMeals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
An early start with a packed breakfast for Kishanpur Wildlife Sanctuary, part of the Dudhwa Tiger Reserve, where hundreds of swamp deer graze around the lake of Jhadi Tal with storks and ducks on the water. Children love counting the stags' antler tines through binoculars. Return to the lodge for lunch and a rest, then a final afternoon safari in the sectors with the best recent tiger signs.
Day08
Back to Lucknow
Overnight: Lucknow≈ 235 km · 5 hMeals: Breakfast, Dinner
An optional short dawn drive, then breakfast and the drive back to Lucknow, arriving in the afternoon. Check in at Taj Mahal Lucknow for a swim and a rest. Older children may enjoy a late visit to the Residency, whose walls still show the damage of the 1857 siege. In the evening, a family dinner of Awadhi dishes at the hotel to close the journey.
Day09
Departure from Lucknow
≈ 15 km · 30–45 minMeals: Breakfast
After breakfast, transfer to Lucknow airport for your flight home or onward. Families continuing to Varanasi can drive there in about 5.5 to 6 hours, and we can extend the journey with two or three nights on the Ganges.
Dudhwa opens around 15 November; this journey runs from mid-November to April.
Lodging at Dudhwa is simple and clean, not luxury.
Keoladeo is in Rajasthan, about 55 km from Agra; birdlife depends on that year's water levels.
The Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays; we arrange the Agra days around it.
Questions travellers ask
Good to know
What age is this family journey suitable for?
From about eight years old, when children can manage early starts and three-hour safaris. Younger children can join with shorter drives and more pool time. Teenagers enjoy the Taj, Fatehpur Sikri and the maze at the Bara Imambara as much as the wildlife.
Will the children see a tiger?
Possibly, but it is not guaranteed. Dudhwa's tigers are harder to see than in central Indian parks. Children see plenty of other animals: swamp deer herds, elephants, monkeys, birds and, where access allows, rhinos. Our naturalists make tracking itself an adventure.
Why ITC Mughal for families?
ITC Mughal has large gardens, a long pool and spacious rooms, which suit children after early mornings. It is a few minutes from the Taj Mahal by car. The Oberoi Amarvilas is closer and has Taj views from every room but is better suited to couples.
What are the lodges like at Dudhwa?
Simple and clean, with basic rooms and home-style food. There are no luxury lodges near the park. Families who enjoy camping or simple travel find them charming. We balance them with Taj Mahal Lucknow on either side. Rooms have private bathrooms, and food is freshly cooked home-style Indian.
Is there a lot of driving on this journey?
There are three long drives of about 4 to 5 hours: Delhi to Agra, Agra to Lucknow and Lucknow to Dudhwa and back. The expressways are smooth with clean rest areas. We plan stops every two hours and bring snacks and games for children.
When is the best time for this family journey?
Mid-November to March, when Dudhwa is open and the weather pleasant. School holidays around Christmas and February half-term work well, though December and January bring morning fog. Keoladeo's birdlife is best from November to February. From April the heat builds quickly in Agra and Lucknow.
Is the food suitable for children?
Yes. Hotels serve a wide range of Indian and international dishes, and kitchens adapt spice levels. At Dudhwa food is simpler but freshly cooked. We avoid street stalls for young children except long-established places on the guided walk. Bottled water and familiar snacks are always in the car.
Can we add Varanasi to this journey?
Yes. From Lucknow, Varanasi is about 5.5 to 6 hours by road or train. Two or three nights there add dawn boats and the evening aarti, which older children usually find fascinating. We then fly home from Varanasi. Taj Ganges, with its pool and gardens, suits families well.
Are the safaris safe for children?
Yes. Safaris are in open jeeps with a park guide and our naturalist, on set routes, and passengers stay seated. Children must be supervised and keep hands inside the vehicle. Bring warm clothes for winter mornings, when open jeeps are cold.
