By forest jeep to Dudhsagar Falls

Dudhsagar lies inside the sanctuary, and the only way to the foot of the falls by road is the forest track from Collem, run by local jeep operators under forest department control. Tickets, life jackets for the pool and the jeep are arranged at the Collem counter, and we send a team ahead to queue so you do not have to.
The track runs for about 11 km through forest, crossing streams that are deep after the monsoon and shallow by spring. The ride takes about 45 minutes and is bumpy. From the end of the track, a short walk over rocks leads to the pool below the lowest tier, where the full height of the falls rises above you and trains cross the viaduct overhead.
You have about an hour at the falls to swim in the pool with a life jacket, photograph and rest, before the return ride. In October and November the falls are at their fullest; by April the flow is much reduced.
Questions travellers ask
Good to know
When is the Dudhsagar jeep safari open?
The forest track from Collem has usually opened in October, after the monsoon, and closed in late May or early June. Dates, ticket rules and daily limits are set by the forest department and change, so check current status before you travel.
Can you swim at Dudhsagar Falls?
Swimming has been permitted in the pool at the foot of the falls in the dry season, with life jackets, which are compulsory and provided. The rocks are slippery, and the water is cold and deep in places. Children should stay close to an adult.
Is the Dudhsagar jeep ride suitable for older travellers?
The ride is about 45 minutes each way on a rough, bumpy forest track, followed by a short walk over rocks. It is fine for most fit older travellers, but not for those with back or neck problems. The view from a passing train is an alternative.
