A morning walk through Samode village

A gentle morning walk from the palace gates through Samode's market and lanes, past temples, wells and small workshops, with a guide who knows the village families.

Samode village grew in the shadow of the palace, and many families have links to it going back generations. The main street has a small market, sweet shops and tea stalls, and the lanes behind lead to temples, a step-well and courtyards where people work at home.

Walking with a guide from the palace, you see daily life as it unfolds: milk being delivered, children heading to school, women at the well, men at the tea stall. Depending on the day, you may meet craftspeople at work, such as potters or painters. Your guide will ask before you enter any home or workshop.

The walk is short and flat, about 2 km, and ends back at the palace for a late breakfast. It is a good way to start a day before the drive to Jaipur or Shekhawati. Ask before photographing people.

Questions travellers ask

Good to know

Is the Samode village walk worth doing

Yes, for a short, relaxed look at village life in the hills near Jaipur. It is a good contrast to the palace and the city. The walk is easy and takes about an hour and a half. The route is flat, about 2 km, through the market and lanes, past temples, a step-well and small workshops, with a guide from the palace who knows the families. Ask before photographing people.

Can I buy crafts in Samode village

Some local craftspeople sell their work, but Samode is not a major craft centre. For more choice, plan shopping in Jaipur's bazaars or Bagru for block prints. On the village walk, you may meet potters or painters at work, and your guide will ask before you enter any home or workshop. Jaipur is about an hour away, so shopping fits easily before or after Samode.

What time should I do the Samode village walk

Early morning, between about 7.30 and 9.30, when the village is waking up, the light is soft and the air cool. Return for a late breakfast at the palace. You see milk being delivered, children heading to school and women at the well. The walk is flat, about 2 km, and a good start to a day before the drive to Jaipur or Shekhawati.
