Samode

A painted palace in the hills an hour from Jaipur

Samode is a village in the Aravalli hills about 42 km from Jaipur, home to Samode Palace, a family-owned palace hotel with some of the finest painted interiors in Rajasthan. Stay one or two nights at the start or end of a Jaipur journey, or on the way to Shekhawati.

Samode grew around a fort on a hill and a palace below it, built and enlarged from the 16th to the 19th centuries by a family of nobles who served as ministers at the Jaipur court. Their wealth and position show in the palace interiors, especially the Durbar Hall and the Sheesh Mahal, covered in painting and mirror work of great delicacy.

The village below the palace is small and quiet, with a market, temples and farms spreading into the hills. Above it, steps climb to the small fort for views over the countryside. A few kilometres away, Samode Bagh, a walled Mughal-style garden belonging to the same family, has been run as a luxury garden camp.

We use Samode as a first night after arriving from Delhi, a calm last night after Jaipur, or a stop on the way north to Shekhawati. One night is enough for most; two nights give time to rest, walk the village and climb the fort. Visit from October to March, when the days are mild and the evenings cool.

Highlights

What Samode does best

The Durbar Hall

A hall of audience covered in painted floral and figurative work, with arches and a gallery above. In the late afternoon light, the colours glow and the detail is clearest.

The Sheesh Mahal

A mirrored room where small pieces of glass and mirror are set into painted plaster in floral patterns. Candlelight in the evening makes it sparkle.

The fort steps at sunset

Climb the steps behind the palace to the small fort on the hill for views over the village, the palace and the Aravalli. Go in the last hour before sunset.

Samode Bagh

A walled Mughal-style garden a few kilometres from the palace, with fountains and channels, run by the family as a garden camp. A good place for lunch on a quiet day.

Village life

Walk through the small market and lanes below the palace, past temples and craft workshops, with a guide who knows the families. Mornings are calm and friendly.

Where to stay

Rooms we book

Samode Palace, the family-owned palace hotel in the village, is the place to stay, with rooms and suites around courtyards, painted public rooms and terraces with pools. Rooms vary in size and style, so we book suites where possible. Samode Bagh, the family's garden camp a short drive away, has offered luxury tents in a walled Mughal garden; check current status before you travel. Samode Haveli, a separate family property in Jaipur's old city, makes a good pairing.

From our planners

Five things to know

  1. Arrive after lunch to see the Durbar Hall in the late afternoon light
  2. Climb to the fort in the last hour before sunset; bring water and good shoes
  3. Book a suite; the smaller rooms lack the character of the palace
  4. Samode works best as one or two nights, not a day trip, to see it after visitors leave
  5. Combine with a long drive to Shekhawati, which starts just north of Samode

Questions travellers ask

Questions about Samode

Is Samode worth visiting

Yes, for its palace. The Durbar Hall and Sheesh Mahal are among the finest painted interiors in Rajasthan, and the village setting is a calm contrast to Jaipur. One night is ideal for most travellers. Samode is about 42 km, 1 hour from Jaipur. Arrive after lunch for the Durbar Hall in late afternoon light, climb to the fort before sunset, and walk the village the next morning.

How far is Samode from Jaipur

About 42 km, 1 hour by car. The road leaves Jaipur to the north-west and climbs gently into the Aravalli hills. Samode is also on the way to Shekhawati. Jaipur International Airport is about 55 km, 1.25–1.5 hours through the city, and Delhi about 270 km, 5 hours. Mandawa is about 130 km, 2.5 hours on. We often use Samode as a first night after Delhi.

Is Samode Palace a good hotel

It is a characterful heritage palace hotel, family-owned, with beautiful public rooms and terraces. Rooms vary in size and style, so book a suite. It suits travellers who value history and atmosphere. Rooms and suites are set around courtyards, with painted public rooms and terraces with pools. The smaller rooms lack the character of the palace, so we book suites where possible. One or two nights suit most travellers.

Can you do Samode as a day trip from Jaipur

Yes, for lunch and a look at the palace interiors, subject to current day-visit rules. Staying overnight lets you see the palace at sunset and after visitors leave, which is when it is at its best. The drive is about 1 hour each way. Day visits have generally depended on a lunch booking or entry fee, occupancy and events, so check current status before you travel.

Is Samode good for a honeymoon

Yes. The palace is romantic, the setting quiet and the evenings special. It works well as one or two nights between Jaipur and the rest of a Rajasthan honeymoon. Arrive after lunch for the Durbar Hall in late light, climb to the fort for sunset, and see the Sheesh Mahal by candlelight. Lunch at Samode Bagh, the family's walled garden, adds a quiet day. We book suites where possible.

What is the best time to visit Samode

October to March, with mild days and cool evenings. December and January nights can drop to around 5 °C. April to June is hot. These months suit the fort climb in the last hour before sunset, a morning village walk and lunch at Samode Bagh. July to September brings the monsoon and greener hills. In the hot months, we keep outings to early morning and evening.

What else is there to do near Samode

Climb to the fort, visit Samode Bagh, walk the village, or continue north to the painted havelis of Shekhawati. Jaipur's sights are an hour away. The fort climb takes about 20–30 minutes up stone steps; go in the last hour before sunset. Samode Bagh is about 10 minutes by car for lunch. Mandawa is about 130 km, 2.5 hours, so Samode makes a good night on the way north.

Is Samode Palace family-friendly

Yes, for families who enjoy history and space. Children like the terraces, pools and fort climb. Rooms vary, so tell us about your family when booking. The fort climb suits children comfortable with steps, with torches for the way down. The village walk is flat, about 2 km, and lunch at Samode Bagh gives time to rest under the trees. We book suites where possible.

Who owns Samode Palace

The palace belongs to the Samode family, descendants of the nobles who built it, and is run by them as a heritage hotel. They also own Samode Haveli in Jaipur and Samode Bagh nearby. Their forebears served as ministers at the Jaipur court and decorated the palace in the 19th century to match their standing. Samode Haveli, in Jaipur's old city, pairs well with a night at the palace.
