Watching Agra's marble inlay craftsmen at work

Agra's stone inlayers practise the craft used on the Taj Mahal: cutting coloured stones into tiny shapes and setting them into marble. We visit a family workshop to watch every step, with no obligation to buy.

Pietra dura, called parchinkari in Agra, is the technique you see on the Taj's cenotaphs and on Itmad-ud-Daulah: a design is carved into white marble and filled with stones cut to match. The craft is still practised by families in the lanes of the old city and Taj Ganj, many of whom trace their work back several generations.

In the workshop you see the stages one by one. A craftsman sketches the pattern on marble and chisels the recesses. Another shapes slivers of carnelian, malachite, lapis lazuli, jasper and mother of pearl on a hand-turned grinding wheel, checking each petal against the hollow. The pieces are fixed with a natural adhesive and the whole surface is polished until the stone and marble sit flush.

A small coaster can take days, a table top many months. Your guide helps you judge quality: true inlay feels perfectly smooth, the colours come from stone rather than paint, and a torch held to the marble shows how light passes through. If you do buy, we ask for a written description of materials and arrange insured shipping.

Questions travellers ask

Good to know

How can I tell real marble inlay from fakes in Agra?

Real pietra dura uses cut stone set into marble, so the surface is completely smooth and each colour is consistent within a piece. Shine a torch on the back: genuine Makrana-type marble glows through. Painted or resin copies show brush marks or a plastic shine. Buy from a workshop where you have seen the work and ask for a written certificate.

Will we be pressured to buy at the workshop?

Not on our visits. We choose workshops where the visit is about the craft, and we tell them in advance that guests are there to watch. You are free to leave with nothing. Our guides are not paid commission, which matters in Agra, where many shopping stops are arranged around it.

Can marble inlay pieces be shipped overseas?

Yes. Reputable workshops pack and ship table tops, boxes and panels by air or sea freight, with insurance. Ask for the full cost including duty at your end, and expect sea freight to take two to three months. Small boxes and coasters travel safely in hand luggage if well wrapped.
