Lchang Nang Retreat

Lchang Nang, meaning house of trees, is a small retreat in Sumur village in Nubra, set among willows and fields with views of the surrounding peaks. Calm, well-run and close to Samstanling monastery, it is our first choice in Nubra.

Sumur lies on the Nubra river side of the valley, greener and quieter than Hunder and Diskit across the Shyok. Lchang Nang sits among trees and walled fields on the edge of the village, with rooms looking out to the mountains. The design is simple and calm, using wood, stone and Ladakhi textiles, and the garden is a pleasant place to rest after the drive over Khardung La. Sleep is easy.

The retreat is small, which keeps service personal and the atmosphere peaceful. From here, Samstanling monastery is a short walk or drive, Panamik's hot springs are about 30 km north, and the Hunder dunes are about 45 minutes away. Lchang Nang is seasonal, open in the summer months. Check current status before you travel. Book early for July and August. Rooms are limited, so we reserve them as soon as dates are set.

Why we book it

  1. Quiet setting in Sumur, away from the busier Hunder side
  2. Small and personal, with garden and mountain views
  3. Close to Samstanling monastery and Panamik

Questions travellers ask

Good to know

Where is Lchang Nang Retreat?

Lchang Nang is in Sumur village, on the Nubra river side of the valley, about 25 km from Hunder and roughly 125 km from Leh via Khardung La. The drive from Leh takes about five hours with stops. Samstanling monastery is close by.

Is Lchang Nang open all year?

No, it is seasonal and usually opens in the summer months, roughly May to September. Dates can change, so check current status before you travel. Outside the season, Nubra accommodation is very limited. Book early for July and August. We confirm each spring.

Is Lchang Nang close to the Hunder sand dunes?

The dunes at Hunder are about 45 minutes away across the Shyok. We visit them in the late afternoon and return to Sumur for dinner. Guests who want to walk to the dunes may prefer a camp in Hunder. Diskit is on the way.
