Morning at Karsha monastery

Karsha lies about 10 km from Padum on the far side of the Stod river. Its whitewashed buildings rise in tiers up a bare mountainside above the village, linked by steep paths and stairways. The monastery belongs to the Gelugpa order and is home to a large community of monks, many of them young novices. Prayer flags line the paths. It is one of the most striking sights in Zanskar.
We arrive early for the morning puja, when the assembly hall fills with chanting and the smell of butter lamps. Afterwards, a monk may show you the older chapels, with murals and statues that have survived centuries of isolation. Karsha holds a festival with masked dances in summer, usually in July. Bring warm layers. Ask before photographing inside the halls. A small donation is appreciated by the community. Novices are curious.
From the upper terraces you look down on Karsha village, its barley fields and the wide plain of the Stod and Lungnak rivers meeting near Padum. We walk down through the village lanes, past chortens and mani walls, and meet the car at the bottom. Allow two to three hours, and wear good shoes for the steep paths. Lunch follows in Padum, with a quiet afternoon. Sunset over the valley is fine.
Questions travellers ask
Good to know
How far is Karsha from Padum?
Karsha is about 10 km from Padum, around 20–30 minutes by road across the Stod river. The road reaches the base of the village, but the climb to the upper halls is steep and on foot. Allow two to three hours for the visit.
Does Karsha have a festival?
Yes. The Karsha Gustor festival, with masked cham dances, is held in summer, usually in July, following the Tibetan calendar. It draws villagers from across Zanskar. Dates change each year, so check current status before you travel. Book early, as Padum has few rooms.
Is the climb at Karsha difficult?
It is steep and uneven, climbing about 100 m from the village to the upper chapels. At around 3,700 m, take it slowly. By the time you reach Zanskar you will be acclimatised, but rest often and carry water. The views reward the effort.
