Stongde monastery and Zangla palace

A day east of Padum to Stongde, a monastery on a high ridge with old chapels and wide views, and on to Zangla, with a ruined royal palace and a small nunnery. Quiet villages and few visitors make it a perfect Zanskar day.

Stongde monastery sits on a ridge about 18 km north-east of Padum, reached by a road that climbs steeply from the valley. It belongs to the Gelugpa order and has several chapels, some with fine old murals and statues. From the roof, the view stretches over the Zanskar valley to the snow peaks beyond. Morning light is best. Ask your guide about the history. Few visitors make the climb here.

Continue along the eastern side of the valley to Zangla, about 35 km from Padum. The village was once the seat of a minor royal family, and the ruins of their palace stand on a hill above the fields. Zangla also has a small nunnery, where the nuns may offer tea and show you their prayer hall. A small donation is welcome. The fields are lovely. Barley ripens in late August.

The return to Padum follows the same road, with stops for photographs of villages, chortens and the river. The whole day takes six to seven hours with stops and a picnic lunch. The roads are rough in places, so we use a high-clearance vehicle. Carry water, snacks and warm layers. Allow six to seven hours for the full day, with stops for photographs of villages, chortens and the river. Rest in Padum afterwards.
