Questions travellers ask
Good to know
Is January a good time to visit North East India?
The driest, clearest month in the plains and the Khasi Hills. Kaziranga is fully open, mornings are misty and the grass has started to burn back, which improves sightings. Shillong nights fall close to 5 °C, so the fireplace at Ri Kynjai earns its keep. Tawang is very cold and snow can close roads above Dirang for a day or two after a storm. A good month for Assam, Meghalaya and the Majuli river island.
What is the weather like in North East India in January?
Guwahati 11–24 °C, Shillong 6–15 °C, dry and clear. Conditions differ by altitude and coast, so check the forecast for each stop a week before you travel.
Where should we go in North East India in January?
We suggest Kaziranga National Park, Shillong, Majuli. Book Kaziranga jeeps for the first morning slot, when mist lifts off the wetlands.
